View Full Version : Did I read this right...parental leave AS WELL as 5k baby bonus?
I was just reading the Herald Sun budget and it read that parental leave will be 18 weeks min wage.
It also reads that the 5k baby bonus will remain!
Those who don't work 10 months leading up to leave, wont get the 18 weeks, but will get the baby bonus and benefits.
So if I have a 2nd child in 2011, work part time before hand, ill get 18 weeks plus 5K bonus?

I could be wrong but I 'think' that if you leave paid employment to have a baby then you get 18wks paid maternity leave but can't claim FTB until AFTER the 18wks are up.
If you aren't in paid employment when you have a baby, then you get the $5k baby bonus and CAN claim FTB straight away.

It's one or the other. If you were working, you get the paid parental leave. If you were not, you get the baby bonus.
If anyone has the herald sun, they have not worded it that well. I checked other websites and it does read if you get 18weeks you dont get bonus. But herald sun reads "baby bounus will remain unchanged" or something like that. Maybe it means the amount.

The way that I understand it is that if you get the paid parental leave then you are not able to receive the baby bonus ever or FTB until after the 18 weeks.
So if you work it out its basically the $5k plus your FTB so weather you are a stay at home mum or a worker who wants the parental leave its basically the same just a different way of saying it.

:iagree: thats exactly it.
Soo much for being an 'incentive' to working mums hey?
They say you cant claim FTB whilst receiving parental leave, but what happens if you claim FTB for your other children, is that still exempt?
Anyone know?

I would assume that you can still claim for your other children during the 18 weeks, but can't claim FTB for the new addition until AFTER the 18 weeks is up.
FTB part B is for single income (or very low income) families. All the documents I've read say that people on PPL won't be able to claim FTB-B. No mention of Part A...
You'll only get PPL AND Baby Bonus if you're having multiples.
