Hi, Any help will be appreciated. We moved our son 17 months to a single bed and new room a few weeks ago due to our new baby arriving in a few weeks time. All was going really well for him apart from waking up half hour earlier. He would then wake up happy and knock at the door to be let out. Now the last week he is waking an hour earlier and sitting up in bed crying hysterically. He always used to resettle in the cot with a dummy but won’t resettle at all now and we have to get him up.
Any suggestions as to how to settle him and get him to sleep that extra hour again?
We have toys in the room for him to play with but he ignores them. We had a musical toy in the cot he used to play with but have nowhere to attach it to in his new bed. He no longer has a sleeping bag so one less layer and at the moment hasn't learnt to stay under the blankets.
Our new baby is due very soon and we would love to get him settled back into his old routine!
Thank you, Beerie

Hmm, the crying hysterically sounds like something is upsetting him when he wakes. How early is he waking? Our DD used to wake about 5 and it seemed too early to be up for the day :p and we worked out it was hunger waking her, so we had cereal ready, feed her and she went back to bed till about 8 (she was 15 months old then)

Maybe he has had enough sleep, or is very wet and uncomfortable or cold. At that age they roll around a lot so won't stay as warm or under blankets as in a cot. His routine is likely to be up the creek when you have a new bub even if you get him back into it.

Hope you get some useful to suggestions to try and all the best with the new bub:)

could you buy the all in one suits but for bigger size. there are sizes for even my nearly 3 year old. they even have special non slip souls. ( so he can play a little b4 bed)

there usually in target or kmart.

seth still does wake up crying occasionly except here its 5am.:dizzy:

hopefully for you it stops sooon.

Maybe its the room change thats upset him maybe you need two cots and try him in a big bed when he's a little older. There is something from spotlight and ikea stores called a bed tent it might make him feel more cosy and secure like he did when he was in the cot.

I haven't braved the world of the big bed yet with my DD as she sleeps so well i am afraid of upsetting it just yet.
I would think that seeing as they still wriggle around so much at that age perhaps look at target/kmart/big w etc for a sleep suit to keep him warm at night if he does wriggle out of the blankets, also i saw on the gro-bag website the other day a my first bed set for toddlers where the sheets kind of zip up on the sides like a sleeping bag IYKWIM.
Also do you have a rail on the bed so that its a bit sililar to the cot?

Ever since DS got moved to the big bed he is doing the same thing. Except now that the clocks have gone back he is getting up between 3:30 and 4am. I have to consantly get up and put him back to bed. He can get out of his room and he sneaks into the living room - turns the tv on for light and then destroys whatever he can get his hands on - almost as an act of defiance or something. I am at my wits end. We are expecting twins in a few months - I just can't imaging how I'm going to cope if he is still at this then. He is almost 3 now and has been doing it for around 4 months. gggrrr - he comes into my room sometimes when I;m asleep and sticks his fingers in my eye and says 'no sleep mumma - wake up, wake up!!!'

I'll be looking eagerly at this thread for suggestions:)

Thank you for all your suggestions. He isn't waking as early as some of your bubs, but it's still out of the ordinary for him. We have the side rail on which has worked really well. I really want to stick with the single bed as he has now gotten pretty used to it and has been alright the majority of the time - it's just more in the mornings where we run into trouble. He is already in one of the thicker sleeping suits which have been a great investment! I looked up the Grobag bedding sets and they look really good, I wish I had seen them earlier. If i hadn't already bought other bedding that may have been an option, but maybe if we keep having problems we may need to go down that path. We'll try some extra food at this time I think, and try to dress a little warmer.
Thanks again for all your help. Good luck everyone, especially you Beebs with your 3 yr old and the twins in a few months. Have you tried my trick (which hasn't worked yet...) shutting the bedroom door and keeping their favourite toys right there to play with?
Beerie

Yeah - he has access to his toys and he can open doors. He just wants to get up and play:confused:

Hi. I moved my daughter into her big bed when she was 16 months old (I was 5 months pregnant). We bought a set of bunk beds that make 2 single beds and set up the 'top' bunk so that it had the rail all around except for where the ladder would go. It's great as it's just like a big cot... she loves it and had no problems. We also introduced a special clock for her. The bunny clock is fantastic because you set the time you want bunny's ears to pop up and it's eyes to open... took our daughter 2 nights to get used to the idea that if bunny was asleep she needed to go back to sleep too. It is a product available in the UK, luckily I have family over there... every now and then though they come up on ebay...

My DS3 is 18mths he will wake early when he has gone to bed early ( like 6.30pm) and will wake if he is soaked and running low he a diabetic. So for me he is hungry early cup of milk does the trick for us he doesn't go back to sleep but will have his nap earlier that day. He slept till 7.30 this morning late for him woke up no milk just his normal porridge and 2 vegemite toasts.
