Hi guys,

I'm due to have my first ultrasound in the next couple of weeks. I have called two ultrasound clinics and they both have given different advice for preparing for the examination.

For one, they have advised that I drink a heap of water two hours before and don't go to the toilet until the scan is complete.

The other scan doesn't require that I do any preparation.

Does anybody know if one scan method is better than the other?

Cheers,

L :-)

hi luv,
i believe the difference between the two are that empty bladder is an internal ultrasound and a full bladder is a external! and from my experience although the internal is more intrusive i believe it's much better and i have never had a problem with them finding baby on an internal scan. but it can also depend on how far along your are i was told to drink a litre of water an hour and a half before the scan for my external and i wasn't uncomfortable but that was at 12weeks! before that they ALWAYS either choose or had to do internals as it was sometimes the only way to see the heartbeat!

hope this helps
Kribby:)

Hi Kribby,

Thanks so much for your reply. Nobody has mentioned anything about an internal (I don't want to sound precious about it but I would have thought they would have given that it's more intrusive) so I'll call the diagnotic clinic and ask.

Much appreciated and good luck with your little one/s.

L :-)

Cant really add anything to what kribby's said.

When i doubt drink up most places like to do the external one first and ask to use the loo and come back for internal if they feel its required. Its a lot easier to go to loo later v's waiting for full bladder
