I love porridge and eat uncle tobys quick oats because I can microwave them!

Although I cancel out the healthyness of the porrige by putting a crap load of brown sugar in my bowl hehe.

Do you mean Lowan's? I think it's Lowan's? The ones in the yellow packet? I know they're more expensive than others, but I like them the best. Our nutritionist told us we're better off getting ones that aren't (not sure what to call it...) chopped up? like quick cooking oats. Lower GI and all that.

Any tips for making them easier to cook in the morning? I am thinking about trying them in the slow cooker overnight on the low setting, but don't know whether it would work

MIH, you could soak them overnight in water. :) Not sure how good they would taste though.

I use Homebrand Rolled Oats. We have porridge for breaky almost every morning.

My tip?? Put a pinch of salt in, makes them taste so much nicer! :D

I know you can soak them overnight in the fridge and then they cook quickly in the morning, just warm them up.

Yes:o SIL has friends who's surname is Lowman so I get them mixed up:laughing:

my diabetic nurse told me to only eat the traditional oats for the same reasons.

I'm a bit fussy with my oats. I've tried the generic ones and can never seem to get them to taste any good. Even DH can't get the right and he's an expert at cooking porridge. I tried the Lowan one's but wasn't keen on them so went back to the good old Uncle Toby's ones. I love their flavoured ones but have to steer clear of them.

CD - I find it to be a matter of taste and getting used to it. I have gone through just about every brand and because we go through so much of it, just use home brand now. The thing is when I have a different brand I find it to taste awful now, which has made me realise with porridge it's very much waht you are used to. I think it's the different textures.

It all tastes the same to me. I just can't get the texture thing right with the generic ones. I'm so used to the way the uncle toby's ones come out so smooth a creamy and when the generic ones don't its a bit of a turn off to me. We only have 3 times a week max so it takes us a while to go through a 1kg box....that cost me $4 last time on special.

I buy organic rolled oats from my local healthfood store
I buy a 2kg bag costs 5, lasts for ages

sometimes I buy the 9 grain porridge, as my mum used to eat that and it became habit - it has soy and linseeds and um 7 other grains in it too and is yum.

If I was getting it from the supermarket, I would just get the no frills or whatever cheapest bag of rolled oats as there is no difference, and all the instant brands have crap in them.

I just cook with water for 5 - 10 mins, eat with some soy milk and a bit of honey and paw paw or banana.

I hated it at first, even though I had that every day as a kid I got into a bad ciggie and coffee breakfast habit as a teen and young adult, forcing myself to have breaky was hard but now I think its the best, cheapest breaky that is so warm and good in winter, and it's low gi and keeps me full and satisfied for ages.

I use Lowan's at the moment, but I change brands all the time and sometimes get Uncle Tobys and sometimes organic ones.

I soak them in boiling water for 20 minutes in the morning (usually whilst I do something with DS) and then I add a heaped Tbsp each of bran and wheatgerm, a dollop of honey, a tsp brown sugar and top up the water a tad...then cook them and it's delicious. Another yummy thing to add is chopped stewed apple or pear, they dissolve into it and it's very tasty.

The above is also one of DS's favourite breakfasts.

Our household loves porridge. I only buy Uncle Toby's traditional. DH is very particular with his oats , and says the HB one tastes crap. I don't taste the difference but anyway...

oh do! it's a bit nutty and sweet from the grains..

I would never had heard of it, but when I was little my mum used to make them for us as she is a bit of a hippy - now stuff like humous and tahini and rye bread is normal!!

but yeah, sort of like muesli almost, like a muesli porrige but much much better for you.. the only thing is i can't just boil the crap out of it if i'm in a rush - need to simmer slowly so you don't destroy the oils and goodness in the grains.

lol uh..maybe I'm the only one that in a rush would even consider boiling the crap out of something anyway.. nevermind.:D
