View Full Version : HELP!!! Pain under ribs!!!
Can ANYONE relate to this...............
I'm 25weeks pg and gradually for the last 2 weeks I've had a worsening pain under my ribcage mostly at the front??? And it's worse at night.
I heard it's a symptom of PE but otherwise I'm fine?!?

Either my baby is 6 foot tall or I have a problem that is getting worse??......
Any help? TIA

i had the exact ssame thing, i thought it was rylea getting up under my ribs, but turned out i had gallstones.
yay for me,
Hi, I've got the same feeling although mine is a condition that they are now quite worried about and I'm on 2 weekly ultrasounds until they'll have to induce the baby. I thought I was just getting too old for this pregnancy thing and being child number 5 thought all my insides were just stretched out of shape!
I'm just over 25 weeks pregnant but have too much fluid around the baby which is making me huge. With pregnancy No 4 I only reached 58 kilos when I went into labour but I'm way over that already.
Apparently the amount of fluid around the baby is pushing my uterus up much higher than it should be and I'm presently measuring about 30 weeks. When the uterus reaches the top muscles (at supposedly 40 weeks) that's when you get contractions and have the baby. Now they are worried that I'll go into early labour as the fluid pushes everything up too high. Having lots of problems breathing too and everything is squashed up.
On the up side they are constantly checking my little one and the baby is absolutely fine at present so I'll endure any discomfort to keep little one cooking as long as possible.
If you are at all worried about anything, never be afraid to question it and always get it checked out.
Good luck with everything.
P.S. Sleeping more elevated on heaps of pillows and on your left side was the advice I have been given - apparently it helps with bloodflow to the baby.
All the way through from 19 weeks on ALL three pregnancies I had a monkey hanging out of my rib cage ... or at leat thats the way it felt. I went into one ultrasound feeling it and saw that it was Bubs foot pushing upwards.
The radiographer was great and explained that the foot is not actually anywhere near the rib but is pushing on all the internal stuff pushing IT up.
She said the best way to tell if it is a foot or something worse is if you push diagnoally down from your ribs in towards your belly button the pain should ease. and if it does - whenever you are home and you feel it put an ice cube to the spot where you can feel the tension (where you believe bub is) and the foot or hand or head or whatever appendage is pushing at that point in time will move quick smart.

Hey Nats,
just remember that the problem is not just your growing uterus - its the fact that all the rest of your internal organs have to go somewhere! So they go up - under your rib cage, which pushes it out futher, which stretches the ligaments, and gives you pain. It's completely normal, and happens from the time that your uterus starts pushing everything else upwards.
I had the same pain in my ribs on the right, it was awful. The pain carried on for about 3 months after I had William, I still feel uncomfortable sometimes, but have been told that it's nothing to worry about and will go in time (we're now doing treatment to try for no.2, so it will probably hang around now).
I was really ill for most of my pregnancy and every day of sickness and every ache and pain was definitely worth it for the absolute pleasure that my sweet little baby boy brings us. :smiliedance:

I've had it too - like a vice placed around your ribs. I found out that bub was breech in that he was lying across my belly. He has now turned head down (well and truly apparently) and I know the pressure has relieved. I'm not big (started at 56kg and now 65kg), it was just everything expanding and bubs being too high up.

I had the same pains... Not sure exactly when it started but I know that towards the end, it was very pain, especially when sitting down... It was like, sitting was forcing everything up into my rib cage, or there were kicks or pushes from the munchin inside... I found laying on my left side (the pain was on my right side) really helped relieve the pressure...
If you feel concerned about anything, ask your doctor and get it checked out...
All the best
Thanks heaps e'one for your replies:)
Hopefully the pain will ease up then but i'll be firm with the doctor and mention it next time i go.
I does seem to be easing up though.

yay for me,
OMG it just dawned on me. I had this pain and some days it was so excruciating. But otherwise healthy. So both me and my Ob put it down to just a pregnancy thing, body and muscles stretching etc.
I went to Emergency when Blake was 4 weeks old and ended up getting my gall bladder out. And i thought i never had an attack before that!! WOW it all makes sense now. Silly me!!:o
