Lucky I’m not a first time mum and worried about this comment but this is what the MCHN – whom I liked before this comment now I think she’s just like the rest – has written in Mirabella’s blue book
‘ Referred to GP for investigation of low weight gain, tired, whingy, under nourishment’:shame:
Mira is 18 months and went from in-between the 3rd and 10th percentile to just under the 3rd percentile. We went through so much cr@p with DS and his weight, he dropped way off the charts at around 6 months – just after some paediatric ton advised me to top him up.
Tired, yes she was that day she’d had no sleep as she was up most of the night, for what we can only put down to teething. And it was her nap time.
Under nourishment – she’s a fussy toddler! Under nourished I don’t think so. Please how could she make such a silly remark? She’s happy, healthy, WAY ahead in her speech.
We know her better than anyone whom spends 15 mins with her.
We have skinny kids that are fussy, just like a lot of other toddlers out there. There’s simply no need to go and say she’s under nourished. Lucky I know not to listen to these women; sorry I don’t have a fat child!
OK, rant over.
:hugs:
IMHO, most MCHNs do more harm than good. I refuse to see them, totally.
I have fairly skinny and or petite kids too but they are just perfect, that is how they are built...my DH and I are both slight. Grr, I hate weight charts....

So do I. The charts and the MCHN’s put doubt in parent’s minds all too often.

Oh and what would I say to a GP if I were to go? Um, she’s a little whingy at times, a fussy eater and apparently under weight – at 8.6kgs at 18 months. Pffffffftttt Imagine what the DR would say.

The best solution is to not see them. I have taken my kids to mchns before, only one of them was really good but she moved interstate, the rest of them just told me how to parent.
The charts are just a guide anyway. You know your kids better than anyone else.
They really need to be careful with what they say sometimes. Lucky she hasn't seen my DS. He's 12kgs at 1 year so she'd probably gothe opposite and write obese.
Oh and by the way your daughter has a great name. There's not many of us around:)

Yeah, I've had a bad run with chn's in the past so will avoid them in the future to!
My 1st dd was 'underweight".......
My 2nd dd was 'underweight'......I tried explaining to the chn that that is how she is, her older sister is the same etc etc. Just ignored, referred to the doctor and asked to come back in 2 weeks to check on her weight gain. I went to my doctor. She reassured me. All was fine with dd2. Never went back to the chn :)
Why do they assume they know our babies better than we do!!

Im sure she'd class my DS2 in the obese catagory 9.5kg at 4mths
We had a checkup with our MW at 6 wks and I havnt taken them to see anyone since.

omg i can just imagine reading that and freaking out, thats terrible  dr will probably just laugh!
I'm sorry but I get quite upset when people get on here and run down CHN's who are just doing their job. All she has done is advice you to get her checked over by your GP. Her weight HAS dropped off and IS below the averages of the general population. There are serious health concerns that do show up in the first 12-24months of life particularly when children go onto a solid dominant diet rather then formula or breast dominant diet..such as cealiac disease, and other metabolic disorders. A lot of these present as failure to thrive, and often fussy eating. Children with iron deficiencies are whingy and fussy eaters and often of low weight.
I'm not suggeting that your child has any of these but the CHN is only doing her job. That is one of screening children and referring those that don't fit within the normal parameters to be further investigated. Its up to the GP to question further and investigate or wait and watch as necessary. It would actually be professionaly negligent of her to assess your child, find that her weight had dropped off and notice that at the time she saw her she was particularly whingy and not suggest that you at least get her looked at, just in case.
Probably a poor analogy, but it would be like an u/s tech measuring the nucheal fold and saying "its a bit thicker then usual, but hey you say your feeling fine, bubs looks ok otherwise.. on your way". When they know that most babys with slight thickeing are fine but a tiny few have chromosomal problems.
Sure a lot of toddlers are just skinny due to fussiness, but are healthy and catch up in there own time. But a small percentage that are skinny, have something wrong.
If your not worried it's your choice not to follow up. But dont knock her for making objective observations and making a recomendation accordingly
If you're not worried about your child why go an have them assessed, espescially if your not going to follow up on any recomendations anyhow:rolleyes:

Did I not mention that her brother is skinny - it's just his build. Did I also not mention the trouble we had in regards to his weight and having dr's and paeds putting him through all sorts of tests for what? Having a skinny frame just like his father!
Oh god I can't be bothered. You don't know the fist thing about me or my children - you don't know our back ground. You don't know how sick and tired I am of being told that my children are too skinny.
I should have known that you can't come on here and have a olittle whinge. It is bubhub after all

I’m below average – I’m 4ft 11. My DP is below average he’s 6ft 2 and 55kgs.
They sit in there little room all day weighing children not asking the right questions and putting fear in parents minds.

c38 - Well maybe because it was just about what most of us do going having bubs measured & having the boxes checked ... Most of us 'like' having something like this done so we have a correct record for them when they are older ! It doesnt have to be about seeking some type of help !
On the other end of the scale you have a mum like me who was going & seeing a LC & CHN with her newborn who had issues & was repeatedly told to seek help from doctors who all treated me like cr@p & as though the CHN's didnt know a thing for me to then up with my child in hospital very sick because no one would listen to me ! So how damned useful was the CHN then ?????
Us mums are damned if we do & damned if we dont ...
Milliner - Pffft ignore the comments IRL & here ;) Whinge, vent, scream whatever ... You have the right to !
Little/ skinny kids rock :flowerz:
