My DD is 11 weeks old and saw her Paediatrician
at 6 weeks.
Is there a rule as to how often we need to see him?

We only saw a paed once and that was for the check up before we left hospital. To me a paed is for serious problems that a GP can't deal with.
Was there a reason she needed to see a paed? My kids have never seen one :)

My daughter only saw one twice when she was in the hospital after she was born & another time to check out a lump on her head. Other than that I take her to the GP for her check-ups or the early childhood nurses.

No reasons anymore.. she had a clicky hip at birth but its all good now.
I just have friends and hear ppl that go and see them every month. I thought that was a bit too much.
Thanks girls, I'll just take her to the GP when needed :-)
I was going to ask the same thing recently. we saw one before hospital discharge (so at 3 days old) but not subsequently (checkups with CHN/GP).
But the women at my mothers' group seem to see theirs more regularly.
They all went private, but I was public. It seems to be the difference.
I thought a paediatrician was a specialist doctor, and neither the hospital/doctor/CHN has ever suggested it, so I never looked into it.

We saw one in hospital with DS and then for a 6 week check-up. We saw him again when DS was about 2 as we had some concerns regarding his development and the possibility of autism. The paed that we have seen is very expensive and I can't imagine that you'd be running to him for any old problem...as others have said I think they are more for when you have a serious problem or concern.

We saw a pead just before we left the hospital and every 3 months after until he was 9mths, but DS had really bad jaundice when he was born so we had to get his development checked as it can cause brain damage

My dd has seen a pead from birth as she has a life long medical condition, my 11 week ols son has never seen one as he was born perfectly healthy and hopefully he won't have to see one. A pead is higher than a GP when it comes to childrens medical conditions so unless bubs had a problem i personally would bother waisting my money they can be very expensive

Babies typically see a Paediatrician at the hospital and at their 6-week check up, then for the typical health checks or concerns the family GP is the person to see. As a Paediatrician is a specialist you will generally only visit them if the problem is a little more complex or serious.
My Pead (who is fantastic) checked on Bub everyday i was in hospital - which was 5days! and than saw her at her 6wk check up than her 6mth check up and we dont need to see him anymore unless its for something serious or we have another bub ;)

Aside from birth and pre-discharge check ups, neither of my first 2 have ever seen a Paed. 6 week checks were done by GP or CHN.
DD2 has seen a Paed a few times as she has reflux, but unless she doesn't grow out of it we shouldn't have any need to see her again.
Generally you will get a referral to a Paed from your GP for serious/specialist issues.
