View Full Version : Taking a newborn out in winter
Hi all,
I am due in June and will have a two year old as well. My DS was a winter baby and obviously, being my first, keeping home and warm was easy.
However, I have a very active son who doesn't like being confined to the house (we usually go out at least once a day, even if it's just for a walk).
I'm concerned about how to cope with this with a newborn. I was so protective of DS in the winter when he was a baby I don't know what I'm doing now?
How have other mummy's coped with going to the park/ on walks etc with a newborn? Is it bad for them and my DS might need to suck it up for a while?
Would love to hear your experiences!

My ds was born in the UK in winter so much colder than winter here!
I would just wrap him up in a pram suit (all in one that goes over baby grow) with a hat and a blanket.
I dont think its bad for them and after the first 4 weeks they dont need any extra clothing than you would need.
If anything I think its good to get them out in the fresh air.

I'd go with a singlet suit, an all-in-one, socks, a hat and maybe a fleece suit with a blanket to put over him/her in the pram. You should be fine.

So far I've had a Spring baby and an Autumn baby, this baby will be a Winter baby (maybe the next one will be a Summer one :p) anyway, I have two other kids and can't exactly stay home all day either especially with kinder and playgroup and the like, I just plan on keeping him warm, taking blankets etc but trying not to over heat him either. Skye was born in May and by the time she was a month old it was Winter anyway so she kind of felt like a Winter baby in a way (and May wasn't very warm anyway). I just made sure she was nice and warm and didn't go out if it was pouring with rain (mind you, back then I didn't HAVE to go out, but now Hayley has kinder I don't really have a choice).

Don't forget that keeping bubs in a sling will keep them nice and warm too, and probably calmer than if you were away from them pushing your other child on the swings at the park etc. And it makes it easier to keep them under and umbrella should it rain!!

My last was born in May, and I had two older ones, so school and Kindy drop offs were a must, a good guide to getting baby dressed that I always followed was dressing them in one more layer than I was in.
With a new born I would dress them in singlet, gro-suit, socks, thick crdigan and beanie or a hoodieal and a blanket, as some one else said earlier, the fresh air does them good.
If you think they may be cold, just feel at the base of the back of the neck, if it feels warm there then they are fine.

I agree with Shananaaah, slings are great! Your body heat will help keep you little one warm. I loved my sling!!
Thanks for all the suggestions.
I actually have an ergo, which I've bought the insert for, so hopefully baby will be snug enough in that.
I was always pretty obsessed about "wind" with my DS. I'm not sure that being out in the wind is the cause of wind though. Might have to lighten up a bit this time!
