The Queensland Minister for Health introduced a bill into Parliament today to ban smoking in vehicles while children under 16 are also in the car.

A petition was started yesterday asking the parliament to pass this legislation.

The petition states:

TO: The Honourable the Speaker and Members of the Legislative Assembly of Queensland
Queensland residents draws to the attention of the House that legislation prohibiting smoking in cars containing children under the age of 16 needs to be passed as a priority. A very recent study showed that tobacco smoke in cars, significantly increases health risks for children. Risks include, bronchitis, pneumonia, ear infections, asthma and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome. It was also announced on 26 March 2008, laws will ban smoking in cars carrying children.

Your petitioners therefore request the House to legislate prohibiting smoking in cars containing children under the age of 16.

Residents of Queensland can sign this petition by clicking the link below:

I just signed it. I can't believe how many people smoke in cars with kids, I see it all the time dropping and picking the kids up from school. Some do it with kids still in car seats and all. They couldn't be in the car that long either as they are dropping kids at school, why can't they wait until they get out of the car before lighting up?

Nope, a couple of the other recruits at the academy and I looked it up recently because we thought it had been passed already. Turns out the bill was actually introduced into Parliament late last year, but automatically lapsed when the election was called - it was never actually passed.

Like I said, the bill was only reintroduced today and is still a couple of months away from being passed.

Oh right, i will sign. I am a disgusting smoker but NEVER smoke in the car or the house for that matter. It is a disgusting habit and i hate that i smoke, but smoking in an enclosed space with children is just wrong.
