Hi
I've been prescribed Losec tablets for morning sickness. I am 26 wks (tomorrow) and i have had bad morning sickness since about week 5. It got worse, i can barely keep anything down, even liquids. Up till now i didnt want to try any prescriptions because of the fear of something going wrong. But i am at breaking point now, not coping..
the tablets are ant acids so im a bit skeptical about whether they will stop the naesau and vomiting but if they do anything at all, i will be happy. If anyone has tried them, how long did they take to work?
thanks

hi hun well m/s can be made a lot worse by indigestion, that is probably why i was so sick during my pregs as even when not pregnant i take motilium and somac on occassions for nausea related to indigestion, howveer on the whole its under control just using mylanta.
however during pregs i dont know how good it would be, altho it could *help* it may not be enough. didnt do much for me during pregs, doc tried me on stemetil which is an anti nausea drug and then maxalon and zofran.
my advice would be to take them for a bit and see if they work if u can bare it, did doc give u a timeframe for seeing results? then if they dont work u can try something else, only prob is u dont want to have to wait too long! i know with the anti nausea drugs like maxlon the effect is immediate but i think with the indigestion drugs u need some degree of buildup ie continuous use b4 u see results.
hey there

Losec actualy isnt an ant acid its a proton inhibitor, How it works is by haulting the acid production, here is a link about it http://infantrefluxdisease.com/infant_acid_reflux/index.php/infant-reflux-gerd-information/16-treating-treatments-infant-acid-reflux-gerd/53-proton-pump-inhjbitors-treating-infant-reflux, an antacid is things such as mylanta and gastrogel they nutralise the acid KWIM
Its an odd medication to go on for morning sickness, as it wont help with the vomit of the nausea, all it may help with is if the vomit is burning your eosophagus ( heart burn) KWIM
Have they tried you on zofran or maxalalon they are more comon nausea meds than losec
hope you feel better soon

Thanks for the responses. I havent found that its helped stop the nausea or vomiting but it has helped with the burning created.
I am seeing my OB in 2 weeks so i will ask him about zofran or maxalalon. My gp put me on the losec and she took a lot of convincing to even do that. She isnt a fan of any meds during pregnancy. Because i am already on a different medication anyway for a seperate reason.
Hopefully my ob will be more confident to talk about the option with maxalon and zofran. I think i have just gotten to breaking point with the vomiting/nausea and i lost weight which (when not preg wouldnt bother me:) but it does worry me, i dont want to hurt the baby by not being able to supply enough nutrition.
Thanks again for your replies :)

Losec is safely used on babies from just a few weeks of age for severe gastric reflux, and it is not uncommon for it to be used in pregnancy as a last resort for severe heartburn/reflux.
