Hi all,

I was wondering whether anyone has experienced fibroids in preg? I had one bigger one with my first preg and it degenerated about 6 mths into preg. I was wondering can this degenerated fibroid (we named it hugo!) come back to life in subsequent preg? Hope not the pain really sucked!

Hi Moggs

I'd also love more info on this. I have just been told I have a fibriod blocking my baby's exit from the womb - and the Dr only expects it to grow during preg.

What sort of complications/pain did you experience during preg with it?

Hi Ladies,
I too have fibroids!! This is my first pregnancy, so at my 12-week scan when the nurse told me "Oh, you know you have fibroids?" I went "What the....is a fibroid!!??". At 12 weeks, they found 2 fibroids each about 7cm. I was devastated and panicked and rushed home to do all the over-analysing research on the internet as I could...how silly! Seems they are very common and usually only found in pregnancy. They don't tend to create too much drama or pain unless they degenerate like yours Moggs (which although painful I hear is good because it kind of does itself out of blood supply abnd dies off). Not sure if they can come back after degeneration but doubt it (in my vast medical knowledge that is...ahem...).
Anyway, mine didn't appear to have grown at all at my 20 week scan so my Ob is happy to wait and see if they get in the way of labour or move out of the way. Apparently if they block labour then a C-section is done. Nothing really to stress about apparently.
I've had some pain here and there which I think is caused by my uterus growing so quickly to accomodate both bubs and the 'broids!
If they grow during pregnancy, apparently they can tend to shrink back down afterward.....

I shall try and repost later today if I have the time. It may help.

Quickly, I had this condition with the horrid red degeneration in my first pregnancy. I was on narcotic analgesia to control the pain. It happened twice, once at 19'ish weeks, the other at about 28 weeks. My fibroid was 9cmx10cm.

Unless the fibroid is removed by surgery called a myomectomy ( I had this done 18 months after my dd was born), that fibroid can regrow in a future pregnancy and can degenerate again. It thrives on oestrogen you see. But the reality is that the condition of a red degenerating fibroid is very rare. Its also very unpleasant when it does happen but it is so rare that you should not worry.

My gynae told me that mine would not necessarily repeat but we decided not to take the risk.

There is ,of course, nothing to say that new fibroids won't grow throughout the pregnancy. They are common in pregnancy. But, again, most women suffer no problems from them or even know they have them.

There is a great book that I would highly recommend:

Fibroids: A Complete Guide to your Physical, Emotional and Sexual Health

by Johanna Skilling

Very informative, written in a great way and at times amusing. Dispels myths and gives tons of good advice from procedures for treatment, how to deal with the docs, what to ask, diet etc.

Highly recommended.

Hope all that helps.

Jusr don't panic.

Interesting!! I hope the fibroid from last time or new ones don't come back because the degeneration is unbearable. I guess i'll find out with the first scan.

Even if you do still have the fibroid, don't worry. It does not mean it will happen again. I'm with you on the pain. I have never felt anything like it - YUK! I remember crawling along the floor of the hospital ward to the nurses station when the painkillers were wearing off. It was at that point they put me on morphine!!!

I have everything crossed for you I really do. :fingerscrossed: I am going through the same anxieties cos my gynae left 2 fibroids in cos they were too close to my fallopian tubes.

Common sense tells me its unlikely to be repeated!:fingerscrossed: ...for either of us

:hugs: :hugs:

I had my amnio today....which hurt like...well, it just really hurt!!

Well, I'm laying there whilst they are doing the ultrasound and sure enough 3 new Fibroids appear! Not happy but still hopeful that none of them will degenerate again.:fingerscrossed:

You see you can have them removed, but nothing stops new ones appearing!!!!

can a fibroid get to big and limit or harm the babies growth... also... can they attach to the baby if it is in the uterus? (I know that is prob a silly question... but if you could answer Id be most appreciative)

I had a scan yesterday... and we cant see the baby, as the shadow is too large. We did see the heart beating though :)

The shadow was about 5 times bigger than the baby, and the ultra scan couldn't get past it. I have to get more tests done...
