My baby is 9 months old and when he wakes up in the middle of sleep due to a loud noise or if I have had to unfortunately wake him for some reason his little body will go into a type of spasm - almost like a fit. His eyes are open and he seems to be completely with it. When I pick him up or calm him he stops straight away. Just wondering if this is happening to anyone else and maybe I am being paranoid but I am worried.

Can anyone help ??

Hi there,
It is quite normal for babies to throw there arms out when the get a fright or are woken but when you say fits this worries me as i dont think it is normal for them to shake i think you should speak to your doctor about it.

hmmm - my experience with seizures says that if he is WITH it .. he cant be having a seizure... (there are two types of seizures... but even the lesser seizures (known mainly as absence seizures) - the person is literally 'absent' and often is assumed to be daydreaming by onlookers... )

I am by no means a seizure expert... if you ARE worried... definately talk to the dr about it .. if they think that it COULD be seizures.. there are some fairly basic tests they can run...

if it IS a seizure due to noise (I call them 'startle seizures') they really should occur during the day too .. I would think??

could it possibly be a vision issue?? is the light on at the time ?? or could it be that he hears a noise and is greatly stressed because he cant see what caused it?? until you pick him up and he feels safe??

Just a thought... I'm wracking my brain for what else it could be!! I personally would make a note of how often it is happening .. and what you think set it off .. the Dr will probably want to know ..

good luck .. I hope it ends up being something really simple :hugs:

Hi, dont know if i can help at all, but my son used to experience something simliar, and we learnt from our local gp, that he was having night terrors and even though he seemed to us that he was awake and with it, he actually wasnt. I also visited a place here in perth called Ngala, im not sure if ur from perth, but they are a great support group, and help with alot of sleeping problems, Hope this helps somehow, and good luck :fingerscrossed:

I think if he was having a full on seizure or fit you wouldnt be able to stop it by claming him down or picking him up. My brother had epilepsy and mainly fitted at night, however when he was having one we just had to ride it out. You couldnt stop him or try to 'wake him up' so to speak.
Definately get it checked out with your doc though, better safe than sorry!
