:wave:DS & I are going to England & Italy in a few weeks. We will be traveling for approx 30 hours (including 5 hours in Dubai) I have spoken to our Dr and our local Pharmacist, and after much time & research I have bought a bottle of Phenergan. I am planning on doing the trial dose this weekend.

I am interested in hearing you experience when you used Phenergan on your children.
How long till you saw a reaction?
How long did the reaction last?

Thank you for sharing your personal experience's:thumbsup:

One of my girls reacts badly to Phenergan, it sends her swinging from the light fittings. It was about 30-45mins before we realised (she was given it to help with a reaction to an insect bite).

I have tried it myself (on Drs advice) and while it did help with the sleeping issue, it made me feel so blerghy the next day, I wouldn't want one of my kids to feel like that iykwim.

edit - I don't know what to suggest though. We have travelled with our children but not as far as you will be...bottle of duty free scotch perhaps ?? (for you!!)

not sure about using it while flying but it helped my kids (both) to sleep better. They went from waking 10+ times a night to waking once or none. Some kids can do the opposite tho and go hypo on it so be careful

I used it for ds1 with his breathing prob from blocked adenoids - just dont go under dosing if you get the weight and dose right it works really well if you go under he makes them hyper and they just dont sleep. I think it use to give him a nasty headache too cos he would smack his head, but the doc said it was prob his ears he was smacking.

i have never used it for travel

I used it once for a flight from Sydney to Perth and it sent DD1 absolutely troppo for about 6 hours (the Dr did say this can happen in about 10% of kids). So my suggestion is test it before the flight.

just me personally but I have a moral objection to drugging your kids for your own convenience. I never wanted to be one of the soapbox bubhubber's but using phenergan has been suggested to me for long haul travel as well, but in the end I just couldn't do it. sorry!

I have no qualms though, if used as the antihistamine its designed for...

I agree- i have had it myself and made me feel drugged for and hungover long after taking it...:(

having said this though i have infact travelled with DD on long haul flight by myself with a huge stop over... i did pack a bottle just in case- i thought no way was i being half there and her going hysterical and no options- gladly i didnt have to even think about touching it- she was great- just go prepared... over prepared with things to amuse-
i didnt do a test run- firstly because i was taking on flight purely as last resort and she would have to have been really bad for me to give it so if she went hyper wouldnt really matter would it:yes:
also my sister said her son it worked as intended to dope him and make him sleep on first time however second time used he went very hyper- so i dont think doing a test is really any benifit and the hangover effect on you son wouldnt really be fair just for a test IMO...

good luck with the flight- remember people fly with kids all the time- the airstewards are trained to offer assistance with kid- they provide fun things- kids very facinated by the new experiance itself-
and dont worry too much about what others are thinking cos even without kids some passengers are extremely annoying anyway:p (snoring, smelly, 101 pee breaks, loud, obnoxious)

good luck

:iagree: I travelled a bit before DS was born (Norway in '94, Canada in '06 and 3 trips to New Zealand) and of all those flights most of them had children on them. On those trips I was obviously childless, but the babies and children on board didn't pose much bother. If they did cry, I just put earphones in and just tried to not let it bother me, I tried to be understanding of the situation.

On the 14 hour flight between LA and Sydney most of the kids slept a lot so they were no trouble at all. It was mainly takeoff and landing that caused them to cry (maybe it hurt their ears?). I remember one dad doing a lot of pacing up and down the aisle with his toddler, and that kept the kid happy and burnt off some energy.

I used it with DD1 when she was 12 months and we went to England from NZ where we were living then, around 46 hour-long flight including stopovers. I hesitated at first, I had it with me just in case but had no intention of using it, I felt rotten about drugging her IYKWIM. I thought, we are flying at night, she'll be alright. But we ended sitting next to a family of 4, with a little boy of around 3 and a baby around 10 months. The baby fell asleep and the boy just cried, sob and screamed for 8 hours straight, so their baby woke up and started crying too. Ear plugs worked somehow for us, we still couldn't sleep over the noise but my poor bubba just couldn't sleep, so I gave her a dose and worked wonders, she was asleep within 20 minutes more or less and slept until we got to Dubai. I was petrified it was going to affect her somehow, but no, all well, I even used it once in England the first night to get her over the jetlag. I only used it on the first leg which was at night, no when it was daytime. Had no hesitations at all in the flight back and it worked great. We arrived back home with a happy baby instead of a sleep-deprived one.

We won't be giving out DD phenergan as it sends DH into hyperactive fits.

I would like to say a big thank you to all the members who shared about personal experience using this medicine, it was very helpful to hear both sides of what can happen.

I used it for my DD for travel sickness recently- it is not just reccomended for use as an antihistamine but also motion sickness, naesua(SP?) and as somethign else- its all written on the bottle. i was reluctant to use it but was all that was availlable for travelsickness at the chemists where we were.
But for DD i gave it to her half hour before we left as instructed an dshe was asleep within 15 minutes of being in the car...... and slept through the night woke up fine and normal..... worked well for us

My 3 girls get really car sick and we resorted to phenergan on our last holiday.

Three kids in the back of a car all turned completely hyper and crazy is not fun!:hair::hair::hair: It was a nightmare.

No need to apologise, your entitled to your own opinion.
Could I suggest (before you judge me) that you know I would not be doing it for my "own convenience". If my DS gets to the point where he isn't coping, then I might use it.

Just thought I would add if you think you might use it then definately do a trial before hand. That way just in case you get a reaction you know what you are in for and can prepare for it.

Goodluck. :)

Just wondering if you have ever read the back of a Phenergan bottle?
The medicine actually has four use's
1) Dosage for allergic disorders
2) Single dose at night for sedation
3) Dosage for travel sickness
4) Dosage for nausea and vomiting

It would appear this medicine is "designed" for many use's.

I have only ever used Phenergan for allergy reasons.

DS2 has a life threatening allergy to green ants. The two times he has been bitten he has turned really angry (I can only assume its because his scared and has no idea whats going on). He has had to have Phernergan both times and it has calmed him down and sent him to sleep.

DS1 on the other hand had a wasp bite and had an allergic reaction that required Phenergan twice a day till the rash went away and it done zilch for him apart from send him rash away.

Good Luck with your trip!

i took jarrah to canada on my own when he was 2 1/2 I had a bottle of phenergan for "just in case". i tried it on him at home and it didn't make him sleepy, it just made him dopey and dozey, like he was drunk.

he was brilliant on the flight and i never had to use it. TBH, after the trial (and the ordeal of getting it in his mouth) i wasn't going to use it anyway, unless absolutly necessary.
