I am going to have LLETZ surgery tomorrow for CIN3. As DH and I were going to start TTC soon, we are very upset we will have to wait 4 months now. I have read a lot of information on CIN3 and have become quite concerned with the risks such as low birth weight, inability to carry full-term, c-section. So I am now wondering if it is worth putting a little life in danger?
Has anyone else had LLETZ surgery? And did you have trouble conceiving? My emotions are all over the place and would appreciate to hear some feedback on others who have gone through the same thing.
Thank you!
Hi jennine79
I had the surgery done about six months before we conceived. I admit to not reading any of the attached paraphranalia, but we had a healthy pregnancy and birth.
We did use IVF but that was for other reasons, not the CIN3 or the LLETZ.
That's just my experience and not neccesarily indicative of general ways of things.
I wish you the best of luck.

Hi jennine,
I had LLETZ done on CIN3 in November last year and Im currently 25wks pregnant. DH and I waited till we had our post op check and 1st pap smear to get the all clear and concieved straight away. I spoke to my gynocologist after reading alot of material about pregnancy after LLETZ and was quite scared that I could have problems with incompetant cervix, prem labour, low birth weight etc. My gyn put my mind at ease and told me that the statistics that I read were not overly accurate and that the procedure has been refined to a "fine art" minimizing alot of those risks.
Goodluck with your procedure tomorrow. Get plenty of rest afterwards as you will be bit tender and crampy. Dont stress too much about TTC afterwards as there really is minimum risks nowadays.
Mel
P.S. feel free to pm if you have any other ?'s or just want to talk.
Hello
Today was told my Pap Smear was CIN 3 and that next month (booked it today) I go for the LLETZ. Bringing home the papers to read about the LLETZ .. all I am worried about is will I be able to have another baby?
I have PCOS and that was hard enough trying to fall pregnant finally back in 2002. (Have a 3 and half year old son) been trying to fall pregnant the past 2 years. Now Dr telling me I have to have LLETZ.
While searching about the LLETZ on the net .. came across this site and thought I would say hi and if anyone out there who has PCOS and has had LLETZ .. love to hear from you.
Thanks

I had a LLETZ done in 2002 and I must admit I didn't read all the stuff on pregnancy after the proceedure. But my DH decided we try for bub #2 in March this year and we conceived in the first month.
I'm currently 16 weeks and my OB didn't seemed concerned that I had this procedure done. I am having a CS for this delivery - but for other reasons.
I had the lletz surgery done in september 2001 and in february 2003 gave birth to a 13lb 2oz baby with 6 litres of excess amniotic fluid and a 1.2kg placenta!
Now ... if my cervix could hold all of that after having had the procedure, I'm sure that you will be able to have a normal size bub - don't you?;)
There was never any doubt that my cervix was going to hold ... they seem to regenerate themselves really well. I personally, would wait until you have had your first pap smear after the procedure (mine was approx 2 months later) before ttc, as it wouldn't be any good if you found out that they didn't get it all as you would be worrying all through your pregnancy and that is no good for either you or bub!
I found out that I needed the procedure when I went in to confirm that I was pregnant with my first bubs (lost a twin early on) and the doc found out I was overdue for a smear ... I had one done and it came back abnormal. So ... I am telling you from experience that it isn't very nice to have those results hanging over your head all through a pregnancy ... certainly showed in my blood pressure!

Hi again.
I had my Lletz surgery 2 weeks ago, and it went really well. I had cramping up until the other day, because the cervix stretches and shrinks whilst the cells grow over and heal. I am still having bleeding too. My Gyno told me we should be able to start TTC in 2 months as long as the results come back ok.
I searched the internet about it all, and became really scared. I think it is better not to read some of it; much better to talk to your Gyno. It is a simple procedure, nothing to get anxious about. And very few risks re: falling pregnant.
So HSV 136, the best of luck. I'm sure it will all go well. Something to consider after you have it done. I went to my Naturopath who has given me supplements to ensure proper healing of the cervix. Apparently, if it heals with heavy scar tissue, it may cause pain in pregnancy with the stretching.

cani have a baby after the lletz surgery?
I had my first colposcopy yesterday. My hubby and i have been ttc our first bundle of joy for about 6 months now, after an upsetting miscarriage in June :( My Gyno took a biopsy, but said that that biopsy mightn't be enough, and that if that was the case, i'd have to go in for a lletz, due to the fact that some of the abnormal cells were higher up the cervix, in the canal. So naturally i'm stressing right out about how this will effect futher chances of conception, carrying bubs to full term etc......
From what i've read, and women i've spoken to, most women go on to have successful pregnancies after a lletz.:smiliedance:
Good luck to all the girls out there.

hello, just thought i'd help put your mind at rest. i had a lletz in september 2008 (i had it done under a general anaesthetic as i needed a laparoscopy for endometriosis as well). i then had a follow up colposcopy in feb 2009. fell pregnant & got married sept 2009 :yelclap: (yes, honeymoon baby, conceived immediately, and i'm 37 years old). i am now 22 weeks pregnant and so far so good. My ob. is checking my cervix with regular ultrasounds, but all seems fine. i wouldn't stress about it at all if i were you, as the stress is what will stop you from conceiving :) hope this helps x

I had LLETZ procedure for CIN3 in December 2008. I fell pregnant in May of 2009 and I'm currently 37 weeks pregnant today. I have had the easiest pregnancy so far, even my doctor said I'm doing it 'perfectly' which was nice to hear. :D
I think unless your doctor says there is something to worry about, a LLETZ procedure on its own should not affect fertillity or birth. Also if you do choose to get pregnant after the procedure and your doctor believes you may have an incompetent cervix they can put a couple of little stitches in to hold it shut until late third trimester. A woman I knew had to have this done as she had had 3 LLETZ procedures but still had a very healthy baby girl. Of course having 3 is a bit different than just the 1.
All I can really suggest is when you get pregnant just make sure your doctor and/or midwives are aware of the surgery.
All the best!

I had surgery in 2009 to remove CIN3 cells. I saw everyone talking about th lletz procedure and possible problems from it. I am confussed as I did not have this done (I just googled the procedure and what it entails). My gyno uses laser I remember when he told me I had CIN3 cells he said laser was the best option I had no private health insurance and the public hospital I would have to go to only uses LLETZ so in the end I payed to have the laser version of it done in a private hospital due to the associated risks. I have not had any issues with my cervix during pregnancy I am happy to say and I have had no abnormal pap smears since surgery either. It may pay to look into the laser option?
