View Full Version : Can reflux come and go day to day?
Hi all, we are trying to work out whether DS has reflux, he has many symptoms which have really ramped up about a week ago at 7 wks. He has had symptoms on and off since about 3wks
I understand it is quite common for reflux symptoms to increase at around 8wks. After 5 days of hell - multiple projectile vomitting after each feed, screaming, poor interrupted feeding, needless to say no sleeping (athough he sleeps quite well between about 9pm and 5, settles well after his feeds during this time) to go along with his croaky voice and wheezy breath - he had a day yesterday of being an absolute dream child. No vomitting, great feeding, brilliant sleeping. Today we are about half way in betweent he two.
My question is - can reflux come and go like this? He has all of the classic symptoms but then he has a day where he has none, or periods through the day where he has none.
Our doctor has suggested that if the symptoms persist we try Losec for 5 days to see if it helps so at least we would know whether he really is refluxy or if it is just him/wind/a phase.
Any thoughts?
can really depend on a few thing such as how much feed is stil in the tummy from the previous feed how they are positioned etc if they have pooed or not the list goes on there are a few things that you can try to minimise reflux
here is a link to a web site that explains it all very very well and its writen by a good friend of mine Roni who has a 8 year old who has servere reflux, she knows her stuff ( mods its an aproved link, was told as long as to a dirfect section rather then forum it was ok) It is by NO means comp for BH, its all about puke tubes surgery etc etc ( you know all the boring stuff i talk about lol )

As for what your dr said about losec well mmmm no offence to him but he clearly has no clue about reflux, It wil take about 2 weeks for the losec to make a difernce to the amount of dscomfort from the reflux the reason for this is yes the losec wil reduce the amount of acid that is produced but this takes time and the two weeks also gives the esophagus time to heal as well KWIM

thats an awesome link  handy to know!
i have a few questions from that link... what can i use that is safe to elevate bubba's matress for sleeping?? and what is the actual indredient/s in formula thinkeners??
thanks :D
We used the AR pillow on miki as she was very very bad refluxer, but others use a pillow UNDER the matress and i stress UNDER so it cnages the angle not over so to suffercate
thickners, The only one that I would ever touch is is the thicken up previuosly known as gaucol its the only one that iis soy and dairy free, BUT im am so expert on the feeding stuff as DD couldnt tolerate any and she feeds into her bowel
We have a huge plank of wood elevating J's cot. Is working well now, but prob not so much when he starts moving round:rolleyes:
that is a really good link!
We're using an AR formula (karicare), is it best to use that, or a normal formula with a thickener added??
(oh wise mikenzees mum...:p)
-oh, j is 3 and a half weeks old.
lol me so not wise
what ever is working for you hun, people i know that use the thickens they use it cause there bubs are on special formulars that dont come thickened KWIM, I say if the one you are useing is working then stick with it
the plank of wood is a good idea also does the job, Pillows are just handy lol as they always lieing around

Oh so glad to see Amy has been in hehehe.
Reflux can change day to day & can also throw curveballs when you think you are over the worst of it & they get sick or start teething !
Hope things settle down for you all soon :hugs:

hi there
i've had 2 babies with reflux and tried everything as we got to desparation stage, especially first time round. the symptoms did change from day to day in severity but were always there to some degree. what i think helped most of all was using the baby hammock (Amby). we could never get the cot raised well enough with bolsters and it was always a bit dodgy so switched to a hammock at week 4 and never looked back.
good luck!
