Hi,
I'm planning on doing a number one cake for DD's birthday next weekend. I'm a little stuck on how to decorate the cake. I have seen a few cakes where it is decorated with smarties and it looks great. But, I'm after something a little more girly, and not to complicated. Thanks

If you look on Ebay you can get eatable icing characters.
They come in all colous and pictures.
I brought a Cookie Monster one that said (Happy Birthday Ryder) on it and it was fantastic. I received heaps of compliments on the cake.
They sell Angelina the Ballerina, butterflys all sorts of things to decorate your cake with. It's definitly worth a look!

you could make something like this (can buy number 1 cake tins from various shops) and decorate it with lots of pink stuff if you want it girly (i know in coles cake section you can get stick on eadible butterflys, flowers etc

a really quick and easy 'girly' idea is to make flowers out of marshmallows. You cut them in half and cut each half as a petal with a smartie in the centre.. I'll try and find a pic, it's hard to explain but really easy to do

Agreed. My mums old-school AWW cake book has the marshmallow petals dipped into jelly crystals first.

Yup, marshmallow flowers are easy and yum. This is DD's first birthday cake

And her second (obviously it's a number 2 but the butterflies are easy to do)

Thanks for all the ideas they are great and very helpful.
I'm thinking of writing her name down the middle of the cake and doing the marshmallow flowers around it.
I'm hoping it will be easy to print her name.
TabulaRasa - What kind of marshmallows did you use for the smaller flowers?

I used the mini baking marshmallows and a silver ball thingo as the centre (I'm so up on technical terms:p)

I knew what you meant too but incase you cared the silver balls are called cashous (pronounced cashews)
Good luck with deciding what to put on your DD's cake - My mum did Mr Men and Little Miss for my 5th Bday she used cookie cutters to get the shape on that white royal icing (the stuff on xmas cakes) and then used food colouring to paint the details on them It looked great!

For the centre of the 'flowers' you can cut up musk stick to look like a star...
