Hi,
DS#2 is 1 next week. We have just discovered tooth number 5. Over the past 24 hours, he has had a pooey nappy approximately 8 times and now has the most horrendous nappy rash I have ever seen. I can tell when he has another dirty nappy because he starts to scream and try and climb up me to get away from the pain. I am alternating at each change between herron zinc and oil cream and lucas paw paw ointment. Nothing seems to be working. I started this week to change him over to cows milk by having 180ml formula and 60 ml milk in his bottles. Could this be the problem? If he was lactose intolerant, he wouldn't have been able to tolerate s26 would he? Is there anything I can do to make his poos not so acidic?
Sorry for all the questions. DS#1 is nearly 8 so I have forgotten most of it. :o
I hope someone has the answers. :fingerscrossed:
Thanks very much for reading.
Joanne.

I don't know about the acidity, but I'd be avoiding commercial baby wipes.
Use cooled chamomile tea, and either facewashers, or chux cloths cut into smaller pieces. Chamomile is soothing and antiseptic - and cheap as chips.

DS always got the same when he was teething. I would just use lashings of Amolin cream - I found it very effective and it seemed to be soothing enough for him.:hugs:

Thank you so much for your suggestions. I am really at my wits end. I will try the chux idea and get some amolin cream tomorrow. He is asleep at the moment which is a good thing. He sleeps beside me so at least I don't have too far go to get to him when it is so cold at night.
Do I just make up chamomile tea as needed or can I put it in a jug in the fridge or on the bench?
Joanne.
Joanne, I have just been through the same (well, similar) thing. My 4 week old baby has had a red bum/rash for almost 3 weeks! Poor little cherub. :( I was using the zinc and castor oil and the paw paw ointment and another all-natural soothing lotion as well as using wet washers instead of wipes and nothing worked so in the end I went to the chemist and they gave me a cream that is an anti-fungal with cortisone in it. After one day, the redness has gone. It's not completely healed yet but it is much, much improved! Others have said Daktozin is good (about $5) but the one the chemist gave me is called Hydrozole (?) and was about $15.
My understanding is that if it is not going away in a few days it has probably developed into a bacterial/fungal infection and needs something stronger. I wish I had gone to the chemist earlier. Not sure whether you are at that stage yet, but thought I'd share so you don't wait as long as I did. (silly me.. as if anyone would wait as long as I did. )
Cornflour - straight from the pantry. I have used every cream on the market, and have honestly found that cornflour has performed 400% better than any cream I ever bought.
I used it recently as a preventative when DS has severe gastro, and even though he had watery, acidic poo's for 5 days, he didnt have a skerrick of rash.
For the $1 you will spend on the bag of cornflour and the $2 on a flour shaker, its cheap enough to give it a go!

Thanks to everyone for your suggestions. We had a better day today. No screaming and only 6 pooey nappies (aren't I the lucky one??) He seems happier in himself, still red bum but it's not bothering him. I hope it doesn't flare up again. :fingerscrossed:
Ditto on the wipes. If used on sore or broken skin those things sting!! Even the ultra sensitive unscented ones...

hey roxy,:detective: with the cornflour idea, do you use it as a powder or make it into a cream? my boy's had gastro for 11 days now and his bum has started to get really red in the last 2 days, the skin is actually boken now so am starting to get worried about it. he looks like a little baboon butt:rolleyes: he has only thrown up once, does anyone know if that's normal for gastro? i'm starting to wonder if it's food intolerance or something...

I just keep a lunch box of facewashers in it at the change table. I use it at every change, so it's only there for 24 hours tops. In the fridge would be a bit chilly on the bot.

My little girl had an awful nappy rash when she was 4 months. I went to the chemist and he gave me Hyrozole cream. It worked wonders... the rash had significantly cleared up within a few nappy changes, and gone by day 2/3.
Just be careful not to overuse and stop when rash is clear.
Goodluck!

I have found that daktozin from the chemist is great. I put the cream on thick and then put powder over the top to keep the cream on. It works wonders!

I just use it as a powder - but shake it on really liberally...
As for what is causing his upset tum, it could be a number of things - how old is he? Could be some teeth coming in, could be a food allergy issue, or it could be something like giardia. In any case, I'd suggest a trip to the GP for some testing :)
