Can someone please help me out? :(
I have a chook that roughly weighs 1.4kgs and was thinking of cooking it in the slow cooker. How do I go about this? Is it too late to put it on now for dinner at 6-6.30?

I would chuck it on now and have it on high .
I normally just throw in the chook a tiny bit of chicken stock and do what you normally do to the chicken ie roast rub or herbs or whatever .
At about 2 or 3 chuck in your vegies too yummm
About half an hr before dinner is to be served pop chook and vegies in oven to crisp up at tad and used the liquid left in the slowcooker to make a yummy chicken and vegie gravey :)
See you at 6.30 then ?

I wouldn't it sorta braises it instead of roasts it.
Heaps easier in a baking tray in the oven for an hour and a halfish.
Although I actually toss the potato/sweet potato/onion halfs/pumpkin in a bowl so they're lightly covered in olive oil/bit of salt and pepper and then just chuck it the tray with the chicken and a tinsy bit of water so it doesn't dry out too much.
Easiest ever meal - takes 5 mins to peel the root veg and chuck it all in a pan with the chicken and then you get to walk away for an hour / hour and a half and come back, make gravy and steam some veg and tada! roast chicken.
Then you get the roasted caramelised pan juices to use for the gravy yumo

Hhmm I just read on the yahoo thing where you ask questions and one fella said don't do it in the slow cooker because it doesn't have the potential to heat up high enough.
Then majority of the others are saying to just put it in the slow cooker with french onion soup or stock or whatever and leave overnight. Well thats a bit late.
Might just do it in the oven I think.

I cook whole chickens in my slow cooker. They come about beautiful! I put it on at about 10am on auto though and it's ready at 6pm.

We don't eat the skin so I just chuck the chicken in. No special preparation or anything. If I have a particularly small chicken (corn fed chickens are really little) then I add the vegies in too. Vegies in bottom with a little bit of water to cover potatoes (like a cups worth..not much) add the rest of the vegies, on top and done. It all goes in together. I often do it if we're having a big day out so can't be at home adding extra things to it as time goes on.
I cook beef roasts in my slow cooker too....same deal but I put a packet of french onion soup and a tablespoon of gravy on top.
I find if I leave the meat in for too long it can dry out, but never burns so that's always handy.
Our oven sucks. If I try and cook a chicken in the oven it takes hours (I think it was 4 hours last time). It takes two hours to roast par cooked vegies in our oven. I can't keep our kids out of the kitchen so that's way too long to have an oven on. Slow cooker roasts all the way here! At least until we live somewhere else!

A bit late now...but might be useful for next time. If you are worried about it braising in it's juices, you can rest it on small ramekin dishes, or anything else small that is oven proof, just to keep it from sitting in it's juices. I havent' actually tried it myself, but that's what it says for all roasts in my slow cooker cookbook!
