omg thats so terrible! i gave birth at townsville hospital!
its hard to understand how it happens so often...my bubba did not leave my sight for the 4 days we were in hospital. even when i had to walk him to the other side of the hospital to get some tests done, 2 days after an emergency c-section.
its so sad for the mothers. id be pretty damn angry.

That's awful, a very good reason why mother and baby should not be seperated.

i read this article on a different site last night, and i could not believe that so many babies had been mixed up!!! how do they get it mixed up really?? my three have all been birthed in NSW hospitals 2 different ones and both hospitals have put this horrible tape (sort of like masking tape) straight onto their backs with their date, time of birth etc and the mothers name, straight after birth, i think the stuff is awful and takes days when home to rub oil on it to peel it off, but the hospital staff have said they do it because the regular arm and foot bands slip off all the time (which they do) at least now i understand why they do it, QLD hospitals obviously don't do this same thing?

That's terrible, the back tape is a good idea if bubs is going to be separted from mum. DD's wrist and ankle thing slipped off all the time.
Not separating where possible is a good idea - but it's not always possible. Both my kiddies were in SCN, so no choice really. They were pushing in the private hospy I was at to have an extra middy put on in theatre so the bubs could stay with mum in recovery after a c-section - that would help reduce it too.
Another thought....in most cases (obviously not all, as mum scan be out of it after birth for various reasons) wouldn't you sorta recognise that isn't your baby? I know lots of the time you might be exhausted, but I knw when i went to see DD in the SCN, I walked over to where her cot had been the previous time, I looked at the baby and knew she wasn't mine, she looked nothing like my baby. She was over next to the nurse as she had ben a bit upset after her tube feed, but I could tell she was mine by looking at her.

thats sad. you have to wonder what a horrible feeling that would be...
dd and i were deffinatly seperated, but we were in a smallish hospital and she was in scu so no chance shed get mixed up lol.

I had my daughter at the Royal Brisbane and she straight away was tagged on the back with tape and foot and arm band. Never had any dramas when I left her in the care of the middys so I could get some much needed sleep (I didn't sleep for 4 days straight during labour) they always checked her tags with mine everytime I ever saw anyone about anything. So I would say this is just downright laziness that some hospital staff aren't doing this.

with my 3rd child i had her in the car on the way to the hospital,I had a girl as we were leaving the hospital they gave me a hospital baby book n when the midwife was checking the book she kept referring to my baby as a boy I said no i had a girl, she told the book said a boy.I told her i arrived with a girl n will be taking a girl home she checked that the tags were the same numbers scribbled out the boy section in the book n wrote my details, she wouldn't give me a new book.
I would of doubted myself about my baby if i hadn't had her in the car n knew my little baby was a girl.
i had mine at redlands and unless they were taken away immediately i certain i would have recognised if he wasnt mine if he was taken away
how scary
the hospital tags are useless on small babies anyway the dam things always fall off the little one, I know when DD was on the infants ward they put stickers on the babies backs as well so thay they could acurately check the ID before giving meds and stuff, all the bubs in there look the same with tubes and stuff covering them so its good that they are extra careful

DS didnt have a tape thing put on his back. And none of his baby friends did as far as i know. thats in both the private and public townsville hospitals. none of my cairns friends with babies have heard of that either. maybe cause they think its not big enough hospital?

Bluddy hell that is scary!!!!
My son's tags were falling off constantly & I was constantly putting them back on him. He was in special care so I could not be with him all the time, but almost every time I saw him I'd find one of the tags had come off & I'd have to put it back on.
I would've known instantly though if a different bub was presented to me as he was put on my chest at birth & I knew that face instantly.
i was so worried Alisha was not mine..
going under general to have my c/section ensured i was alone in that room and out to it.
so she could have been swapped by accident / on purpose whatever.. i would not be the wiser.

:iagree::iagree: DD had a foot, arm and back tag at the Royal risbane Hospital. She was in the special care nursery so I was greatful for the back tag- its a great idea.
I also had my DD at Royal Brisbane and she had arm, ankle and back tags - I never knew about the back tags, great idea.
I could never send DD to the nursery I think it was partly because I had a slight fear of this sort of thing, now I will do everything I can to avoid letting any future newborn of mine out of my sight. How scary.
I dont think many mums send there babies to the nursery its more a case of they have to go for breathing treatments, or IV etc

I had my boy at Townsville General...same mth as the mix ups in fact and never had a prob. I was a C/sec & they kept bub with either hubby or I at all times...they even said they do that so their is no mix up. Every step of the way one of us was with him. Terrible that not every1's experience is the same...

The three other women in my room when I had DD all sent their babies to the nursery because they wanted rest, which is fair enough but I could not do it.
