View Full Version : URGENT...advice about going from breast to bottle
Hi all,
My sister has been admitted to hospital today with an ear infection that has spread to her brain. She is/was breastfeeding her 6 month old DD. The medication and the fact that she's in hospital means that she has had to stop breastfeeding. We are having no luck getting bubs to take a bottle. She will take the teat into her mouth but won't suck. I have only ever breastfeed so have no idea what to do??
Help....what should I do? I have one very upset & hungry baby who just wants her mum....

You could try a cup? You can call the ABA for advice too.
oh Bec!!! how hard ..
I have spare bottles etc here if you want to try different teats (somewhere .. but I can easily find and wash them) ..
awww I wanna hug the poor bubba .. how confusing ..
you can try a syringe too .. very small amounts obviously .. but its tedious

How awful, i hope the baby can take the bottle, i hadn't had much luck with my DS2 trying to take a bottle, DS1 had no dramas combining both breast and bottle. I hope your sis gets better soon and bubs is ok, that's so upsetting. :hugs:
Thanks Ladies...you got me thinking about the idea of using something other than a bottle...she is taking some solids from a spoon...I'll just spoon feed the milk. Going to be tedious, but at least she will be getting something into her tummy. Don't know why I didn't think of this earlier.

Poor bub and mum - Is bub on solids of any kind? Or water? If so, can you mix formula into some pumpkin or pear? But yeah, syringe, cup??
Ohh Bec thats terrible.. Haven't seen you around in ages.. I hope your sister is on the mend soon :hugs:
Good luck with getting your niece to take some milk.. Hopefully you can figure something out for her soon :hugs:

Hi Leeny..I have way too much on my plate these days to spend a lot of time online. I try to 'pop-in' every now and then.
OK, so I have managed to get both babies (mine and hers) sleeping at the same time. I suppose I have gotten a small dose of what it would be like to have multiples...so not for me. :D
I ended up spoon feeding her some milk which seemed to settle her some what. I then spent nearly an hour rocking her to sleep. I feel so badly for her..she just wants the comfort of her own mummy.
My sisters husband will be back this morning (he is away for work and the earliest flight he could get left early this morning). I'm hoping that she will be more inclined to take the bottle from him. Do you think she can smell my milk which is putting her off the bottle?
Also, should we take her to see her mum today, or will this make things worse? Kind of like 'why should I take the bottle when I can have mummys milk...then why can't I have mummys milk?' Hope that makes sense.

If mum is out of it then I wouldn't take her.. If Mum is awake and alert then I would KWIM.. maybe cut a larger hole in the teat so she can get that it's milk.. good luck
Just got word...the hospital is releasing my sister this afternoon. :smiliedance:

Poor bubs and mum.
This might not be an option, depends on how you and her mother feels, but would you be willing to breastfeed her?
Just a thought, I know i couldn't really do it myself but some people are ok with it.
I hope your sis is on the mend soon.
no no no. I had the same thing and the hospital HAD to admit me and the bub because she was exclusively breast fed.
