Has anyone had any experiences going through the High Risk Unit at RNSH? I am thinking of going there as a public patient for my mo/mo twins?
Any stories/ info. would be greatly appreciated?
Also, if anyone could tell me whether your ante-natal appts. are with the Dr's or the midwives?
Thanks so much http://members.*************.com.au/style_emoticons/default/original.gif

Hi, congratulations on your pregnancy!

Nth Shore does have a very good high dependancy unit, just be prepared that if you have your babies there and they need care they may still have to be transfered to where-ever they can find beds for them.

A girlfriend delivered there and had a sick baby and he had to be transfered to Westmead as Nth Shore didn't have a bed available. She was a public patient and was told it would of made no difference if she was a private patient (except it would of cost her a lot more).

Unfortunately this is often the case even if you go to a high dependancy hospital. I recently heard of a baby born at Royal Women's in sydney (which is located next door to Sydney Children's Hospital) who was born ill and due to lack of beds was transfered to Melbourne! It is no-ones fault except probably the government for not having enough neo-natal beds.

I don't know about twins but if you where having a single baby and going public you would see the midwives unless there was a problem, then they would refer you to see a OB.

Good luck with your pregnancy!

Just to clarify.....

I think what 061109 is asking about is the high risk pregnancy unit - not the Newborn care centre (which has a NICU, HDU and SCN), which is what Beaches Doula was referring to.

I haven't had any experience as patient, but I do work at RNSH and have heard really good reports about the High Risk unit.

Good luck with the twins
