Hi,
I'm trying to do some research for my sister who is 5 months pregnant and living in Japan at the moment but will be returning to Adelaide to give birth. She is interested in having a water birth, has anyone had a water birth at Lyell McEwen or planning to? Are they supportive of water births there?
Thanks in advance
Heather

They're not exactly supportive - but in the birthing suite/centre thingo they do have a huge bath in each room. I was going to go there to birth, but decided to try for a homebirth, then when I did transfer to hospital I went to the delivery thingo because I wanted the drugs. BUT my advice would be for her to go through the Community Midwives - Northern Women's Community Midwifery Program, and if you have one of their midwives with you at the birth at the birthing suite, they'll be happy for you to birth in the bath. They are FANTASTIC, those midwives, I couldn't reccommend them highly enough!!! PM me for more details if you want. I must go, baby screaming :o

so you can deliver in the bath at the B/U? I had all my kids there, in the old B/U, and I remember them pulling the plu on me, and saying that I had to get out, no bath births, no insurance or it, are they allowing it now? it would be great if they are!
cheers

I had my babies in the birthing suite at the WCH, the midwife said that i could have a water bierth but they try not to let you. My advice is if she wants a water birth to have a home birth, you can hire all the gear and have a private midwife or doula come and support you. But the thing is, you might go to all that trouble and then it's too uncomfortable or you might want to walk around in labour or something. I'd do the ring around and find out what hospitals support it in SA!
Goodluck!

Hi heather
the policies for all hospitals is not to allow water births, but there are some midwives that wont pull the plug as such and let you follow through on your wish.
Be mindful though that if your sister is wanting to do this, to ask many questions beforehand as most midwives have no experience in the area of waterbirths whatsoever and it is really something that needs to be carried out by someone with experience and knowledge in this area.
Good Luck to your sister,I hope she achieves what she wants.
