At what age did your child/ren start sleeping through the night?

I was pretty lucky to have my children sleeping through very early. I think consistently it was at about the 6-8 month mark. There are still nights where they might randomly wake up due to teething or not being well etc. but generally they get a full night's sleep most nights and they are now 2 & 3 years old.

Dd1 was 13 days old.
Ds was about the 12 week mark.
Dd2 is 2 yrs and only just started sleeping through about 4 weeks ago.

DS1 was 7 weeks old when he started sleeping through the night.

DS2 is now 11 weeks old and (of course) still waking through the night.

I was so extremely lucky with the first that I was hoping that DS2 would be the same but I guess you can't be that lucky all of the time. :D

DS is 3 and still wakes during the night. The first night he ever slept through he was way past 1, I can't remember the exact age.

DD slept through at 8 months but still wakes some nights.

DS1 was around 20 months and DS2 was 3 months when he was consistently sleeping through (he did sleep through many nights before 3 months but not every night)

DD is 3.5 and DS is 14 months. Neither sleep through. DD did for about 9 months when she was 2, but DS has never slept through.

What is sleeping through the night?

In my opinion, sleeping through the night means bub/child is put to bed at 7pm - 8.30pm and is not feed or tended to until, say 6.30am-7.30am.

I've often heard the story of the 1mth old baby that "slept through as soon as we got home from hospital" only to find out years later that they "only woke for feeds"

DS1 sleeps through the night (*crosses fingers & toes, spins twice and sings a verse of "moon river" so as not to cause the Sleep Gods to take this blessing away again*) ... I don't know if DS2 ever will!!!!

My DS started around 8 months I think and stopped at 10 months when his ear problems got very bad. The ear problems continued until he was about 16 months. Then he started sleepig through again.

The ear problems are back, however, and I'd say it's been a good 4 months since I've had a proper sleep through from him. He wakes a few times in the night and needs a resettle and then at 5am he wakes and can't be resettled so he's is in with DH until 6.30/7am (while am in with DD ).

My DD is already sleeping 7pm to 7am with a 20 minute feed at 2am only. I suspect she'll sleep through the night before he does again.

DS was still waking for a night bottle until he was about 12 months old. Once we dropped that bottle he slept through.

Both of my girls slept through from about 4 months. They both dropped night feeds on their own. At worst, DD2 sometimes needs her dummy replace during the night but I don't actually need to do anything else to/for her.

The question is though: What constitutes 'sleeping through' ???????????

12 hours? 5 hours? 10 hours?

My sons 18 months and has only EVER once slept 12 hours straight without waking up.. he's never done it since and waking 5 times a night is the norm now.

Well she does it on & off but I am sure if we didn't share a room & I didn't wake up & try to tend to every whimper it would have been much sooner ;)

Sibel is 5months old and still sleeps through the night, AND has since birth:smiliedance:

When I 'thru the night' I'm talking 10-15hour sleep..It varis but she always sleeps minimum 10...I'm so lucky. She wakes up maybe 2-3 times a week but we just put her in our bed and she is fine til morning...

The first time was the night of the 9th-10th of June. My birthday is the 10th so it was a lovely birthday pressy to get a full nights sleep. DS was about 6 weeks old then. He did that on and off until we started having supply issues then he was wake 2 times a night but when we switched to FF he started sleeping through. Since then its only when he's sick that he'll wake during the night.

All big kids slept through around 2 yrs old. My current baby feeds at least four or five times a night. So I think it's a while off yet

Wanna swap?:D

Mine's 6 months and I can't imagine him sleeping through...ever. I think he did once at about 3 months.

I've just accepted it might never happen, so if it does it will be a pleasant surprise.

We co-sleep and he sniffs out the milk a couple of times during the night, dozily has a drink and nods back off. My bladder is probably more disruptive.:o

Lovelymum, the question wasn't designed to "torture" you or anyone else, it's just a good representative of the differences between all children. There is no right age for it to happen and we should not put any pressure on ourselves as parents to have our children "sleep through".:)

I think this is the perfect attitude to have. I went into this whole parenting bizzo assuming I would never sleep again and was pleasantly surprised when DD started sleeping through of her own accord :)

ETA My DD still does wake through the night randomly and that is fine too. I have no expectations still, and am always pleasantly surprised when I wake up at 7am and realise I've had unbroken sleep :smiliedance:but the key for me is to never "expect" it.

I would love just one full nights sleep, or even for DD to either not wake for 3 hours or not need meds for 3 hours in a row would be bliss ahhhh I wish

DD was a great sleeper and slept thru at 6 weeks old. She woke up here and there with teeth but she was great.

DS however.... he did start sleeping thru at about 8 weeks. But the reflux hit, then after that finished he woke up seriously 10 times a night for about 8months :gloomy:

Now at nearly 2 he usually wakes up at least once a night. Around 4.00 is the norm, sometimes he goes back down until about 6am, other times he stays up :hissy:

Hmn, maybe I'll reiterate my comment of "wanna swap?" (but the other way around, and just for your longed-for night). :hugs:

oh no, I didn't think you were having a go, I'm making a genuine offer (well, you know what I mean) - you need a good rest! I can't conceive of not sleeping properly for three years.

I mock complain but I barely get woken up and get good day sleeps anyway.

DD started sleeping though at around 4-5 weeks- as in she went to bed at 9pm, wok at 7am. Then she started waking up at wround 7 months, and she got back into sleeping through again at 10 months. Sometimes, but very rarely she will wake up, but mostly she is all about sleeping!!
