View Full Version : Spreadable cheese
Does anyone know if it's safe to eat cheese spread (ie Kraft - the one in a jar) whilst pregnant?
I know soft cheeses are out because of the pasturisation thing, but not sure about the spread. Or perhaps it's no good because it's processed?

The risk in cheeses is listeria etc. Pasteurisation kills this and other bacteria. Your hard cheeses are ok, but in so far as Brie, Camembert etc are concerned, my OB said that I could have them if I trusted where they came from. The general advice is to steer clear. I still eat the cheese triangles though. Processed but yummy. :D
If the cheese is pasteurised then you have no problems. Its like mayo is out cos of the raw egg content, supermarket jars are OK. Kraft in a jar should be OK.
Processed foods are not a risk in themselves but because of the obviously high levels of fat, salt and sugars in them should be eaten in moderation.
i gather it would be ok...ure allowed cream cheese (eg philadelphia)
i hope so Wattle because i lived on it when preggas with Ethan :o

I ate it when I was pregnant and it was fine!!! :)
Considering that they process the stuff to within an inch of its life, I'd say the chances of any greeblies living in there is minimal. In fact, there's probably less risk than with hard cheeses.
Good stuff, thanks girls. Once again bubhub mums are a veritable endless source of helpful information.
Sun dried tomatoes and spreadable cheese on toast it is for me today :smiliedance:
just make sure the sun dried tomoatoes are from a can and not from the deli   you aren't supposed to eat stuff from the deli window.... (you cant win... enjoy your food!!)
xx
Don't worry, the ones in the jar are better anyway. yummo

hi its my first time on here too. Im 5 weeks pregnant with my first. I just read that mayo shouldn't be eaten. before i found out i was pregnant i used to eat vegetarian sushi roles everyday (1 a day) they had about 1/2 a table spoon of mayo in each.
Now im really worried. What does mayo do?
I think mayo is only of concern if it has raw egg in it. I ate a few things you shouldn't before I knew I was pregnant. If your really worried speak to your doctor about the risks
Congrats on your pregnancy!

thankyou for your reply.
I have been so depressed since i found out i was pregnant. Its as if my emotions are all over the place. Im overjoyed that im having my first child but i have been worried about having a miscarriage or eating things i shouldnt have eaten... and i have had this very light brown discharge for 3 days now. my doctor said it was normal but it hasnt stopped yet. Now that i found it u shouldnt be eating mayonaise i just gave myself something else to worry about.!
It's totally normal to feel that way. I'm still emotional, crying at the silliest things. I also found the first trimester hard as i had spotting on and off too. If the spotting continues you can ask your doctor for an ultrasound. I had several during the first 12 weeks and it really helped me feel more positive that the pregnancy was going well.
If your concerned about what sort of foods you can and can't eat whilst pregnant check out this link: www.pregnancy.com.au/listeria_and_pregnancy.htm (http://www.pregnancy.com.au/listeria_and_pregnancy.htm)
Feel free to PM me if you have any more questions or would just like to chat :)

hello im back again,
i have been really sick with the flu. Im 8 weeks on thursday and again today i noticed i had a slight browny yellow discharge. it had a smell to it (sorry tmi) could it be thrush? or vaginal infection? I had a brown discharge (no smell) 2 weeks ago and that stopped after 4 days. I saw the doc the first time and he said not to worry unless it tuns red but this is 2wice in 2 weeks now.
i hope its nothing serious.
has anyone had this bfore?

Hi firstchild,
Spereadable cheese is ok becasue it has been heat treated and is so overly proce4ssed that there is no way listeria could survive that process. Same goes for mayonaise that is in the jar... I would be wary of homemade mayo though...
It is normal to be worried about eating things and all the changes that are happening to your body... but trust me after you reach 12 - 13 weeks you will be much more relaxed. I was a nervous wreck about everything and was so careful with what I ate... now (20 weeks) I am pretty much ok with stuff - I know what I can and can't eat and dont worry about it.
Discharge is normal during Pg - and if you are worried then go and see your doctor again. It could be an infection... if so eating yoghurt with active cultures will help. The brown colour may be from older bleeding but shouldn't be too much of a concern unless you get red fresh blood. I bled (brown) for 10 days at the beginning of my pregnancy - due to the implantation of the egg in the lining of the uterus. As I said If you are concerned then go and see your doctor again or call your hospital maternity ward.
Good luck with your pregnancy - hope you feel better soon.
