Hi ladies,

What are the signs of nipple thrush? I had it when DD was a few weeks old, but i can't remember, and to be honest I didn't know if the pain I fel then was attachm, ent issues, new feeding issues or the thrush.

Anyway one side is absolutely killing me, and as soon as DD gets on I can't stand the pain. The nipple is slightly purple in colour (as compared to the other which is pinker) and has a white dot in the middle (it could be milk?????, but the other desn't haveit). However the pain , oh the pain. I may as well get a knife and stab myself it would be the same.

I find it hard to compare the two sides as I had surgery on teh right side and that is the side I've always had trouble with. So I don't know if it is just because that's the 'dodgy' side, or if it's more.

I am goingh to the Dr on Wednesday btw, so can get it looked at then, but can you guys recommend anything I can do before then.

Is the canesten cream ok????

Help me please :fingerscrossed:

and thanks :o

I have concerns that I might have this problem when DD is born and was asking my obstetrician about it this week. He said that you use a special Daktarin gel on the nipple and then when the child feeds it should kill any oral thrush they have. Maybe go and ask your pharmacist tomorrow?

Oh :hugs::hugs: it sort of sounds like what I had... and mine was definately thrush!

Head off the the chemist and ask for Daktarin oral gel! They don't reccomend it for bubs under 6 months to use by themselves, as it's quite thick, but it's ok to put on your nipples and bubs to suck off. They ask for your details and stuff to buy it though iykwim.

I used it and I could instantly feel the change. I didn't realise my breasts were so sore and tender. It dead set took away all the feeling I had in them that I had grown to think was "normal".

But yes... I rubbed it on my nipples - well the one he fed off at the end of a feed, and by the time the next feed come around it was slightly absorbed but still there. I would also put a tiny bit on my finger and rub it into bubs gums as well. We were all cleared up in two days... but kept using the cream until the tube was emptied!

Good luck! :hugs: It's horrible stuff! Hopefully it sorts out for you fast!

when you mention the knife that suggests it is thrush to me  the pain is horrible, horrible. I liken it to having a razor blade run accross the nipple and it doesn't stop when you take bubs off.

White spots on the nipple can also be indicative.

Given you have to wait such a long time to see the doc, I'd start with a cream now. It's over the counter anyway so I'd get going with it.

I use the Daktarin cream for athletes foot on mine when they flair up as advised by the hospital LC where I haad my children.

Contrary to popular opinion, this cream does not need to be washed off if you put it on straight after bubs feeds.

It is also preferable to using oral drops because I was advised by my LC that oral drops are now linked to nipple eczema (yuck and ouch) in some women. So a cream is best.

Start it now and by Weds you should have an idea if the nipple is getting better. Remember to keep treating for at least 48 hours after it feels better.

Oh and get hold of some of the canestan rinse from the supermarket and wash all your bras and breast pads (if you use the washable ones).

All the best - nipple thrush is hideous. :hugs:

Thanks so much for the replies - I will go and get some of that gel tomorrow.

I am worried that she may have oral thrush, she is almost 2.5 - so not a bub, and hasn't said anything about a sore mouth or throat.

I wish her age meant that I could put her off, but telling her the milk is sore only holds her at bay for a little bit - she keeps telling Dh to 'fix' it ( he fixes stuff around the house ).

If the gel is ok for her to have in small doses I won't be too worried, so will try to avoid tomorrow's feed (again) and get the gel.

:fingerscrossed: it works.

ps - sorry for all the typos in the OP - :o

Look in her mouth - oral thrush comes with white dots, too - along the cheeks and tongue.

It may not result in soreness either - everytime I've had oral thrush, it's been more like having a hair sitting on the back of my tongue, that I can't get off, rather than soreness, so to speak.

Good luck :hugs:

ok now I feel like a bad mum - I looked in her mouth the other day for something else and saw little white bumps (with a darker spot inthe middle) and she has been complaining of having hair in her mouth, and saying it's on her dummy - even when I can't see it.

I feel stupid now, and will ask the chemist for something for both of us.

Thanks Tam I am

Don't feel stupid! You can't know what you don't know, you know?

Also buy some Inner Health Plus for you both - it will help rebalance the gut flora, and help prevent recurrences.
