Connor was on really strong antibiotics when he was born, for the first 10 days.

When I went to the Chiro about his reflux/colic, he suggested that the antibiotics could have contributed to it as it messes around with his gut flora.

Then when I spoke to the people at Ngala the lady said she was amazed at how many babies she had seen that had probs with reflux and had been given antibiotics early on.

Other than that I dont know. I think some of them can effect vision/hearing - i think i picked that up from the questions in the purple book.

Seems like a very long time for a bubba to be on them

Can you get the US done somewhere else?

I would be complaining in writing or person, not over the phone. Take it from me hospitals and clinics rarely pay attention in less its right in front of them.
2 months is a very long time to wait and considering they knew before the birth you should of been booked for right after the birth with little waiting period in between. Is it possible to find somewhere else to do it? I don't like the sounds of a newborn on medication for that long for something that may be simply treated.

HUGS how frustrating

Calling PMH your self you wil get now where beleive me They are flat out and basicly work of priority lists set by the drs SO how to get around that is the question

Call the Dr that put him on the oral Abs, let him or her know that is her been put back a month, And that you really want to know what is going on sooner, Let him know about the tummy pains and that you dont know if its to do with his kidneys or antibiotics or a seperate issue, he or she wil them be able to call up and get it moved sooner you DS2 US has obviusoly been put down as a last priority ( which SUCKS for a new born ) so with out a pead pushing it you wont get bumped up KWIM

if you cant get in contact with the dr that put him on ABs I sugest calling them at king eddie where you had him and seeing is a pead there can sort it out

Failing that call out patients at PMH and ask to be put through to Renal clinic and see if they can sort it out ( if you want direct number PM me )

Thanks Amy. I did get in touch with renal clinic and they put me on a list to be contacted by a dr there but that won't happen for another week at least.

I think I will be having to call KEMH and see if I can talk to one of the paeds there.

Could you just go to a gp to get a referal for an ultrasound elsewhere? I think SKG make you only pay the gap, and its really small, or nothing if you have a HCC.
It seems really silly they would make you wait so long when you could go elsewhere.

I agree, telling them he is having tummy pains will get them to take a bit more notice of you.

if it's serious enough is there any chance that you could simply rock up to an emergency department?

I would personally be heading off to your GP and getting a referral to a private clinic to get the ultrasounds done, and possibly even a referral to a private nephrologist. You'll incur an out-of-pocket expense, but most of it will be refundable by medicare, and in the case of having a newie on antibiotics - I would be willing to pay almost anything to get them off the ABs, TBH.

In the meantime, you should be taking a couple of inner health plus tablets every day, and perhaps even talk to a pharmacist about getting Riley some probiotics directly.

Antibiotics really are bad news - they kill off all the good gut flora, and an imbalance can lead to all sorts of problems. The GI problems are just the start of it. Of course they can be necessary and life saving at times - but as a prophylaxis, or unnecessary treatments are just bad news.

If you don't understand what the problem is then you really need to go back and get them to tell, for I personally wouldn't put a newborn on some antibiotics for a extended period of time as a some of them increase the chance of developing Sepsis later on in bubs under 6 months.

I wouldn't take him off them without medical advice - that could be quite dangerous too. But I would DEFINITELY be pushing for him to be seen ASAP, so he can come off them as soon as possible.

Where is the dilation? Does he have a block between his kidney and bladder? How big was the dilation?

My son had a block between his kidney and bladder on his left side, picked up at my 18wk scan.
Obviously much worse because i was monitored closely then induced at 37wks before his kidney shut down so he could have several operations.

He was then on antibiotics few a few months, totally needed. But i understand your frustration and concern if R's medication is not needed yet he is still taking it.

Pmh are fantastic as are the specialists (Dr Andrew Barker is a godsend) but they really are flat out. I would go private if it what you need to do to get the care and advice your after.

All the best, hope its nothing and your DS problems fix themselves and the dilation decreases.

:hugs:
