View Full Version : Sippy Cup
Hi,
Hope this isn't a silly question but I'm just wondering how old your babies were when you gave them a sippy cup? My baby nurse reckons I should be giving it to DS now. He is almost 7 months. Thing is, when I do he gets really frustrated because he doesn't know how to get anything out. I bought another cup that has a teet a closer shape to a bottle but he still gets really frustrated.
How did you start with this?

Are they the soft spouted ones?
I found DS2 found the Nuby sippy cups really great. Yeah and it has just taken me 4mths to get them off of him. :)
But it may take some trial and error with different cups, but it also could be because he needs to get use to it.
Goodluck!!!

Both my kids love the Nuby one with the straw in it. DD is now 8 months but I gave it to her about 6 weeks ago and she loves it.
Honestly...if you are happy with your bub still having a bottle...then you stick with it a bit longer :) There is NO need to force a sippy cup on a baby...the CHN's just love to push babies to grow up too soon and make mum's feel stupid
Just go with the flow
I also found the Nuby straw cops great for DD! She couldn't work out how to use a regular sippy cup (I think the idea of having to tip it up confused her) but took to the straw ones really easily.
I also agree with the PP though that if your bub isn't ready for a sippy cup there is no need to force on on him. My DD still has her milk in a bottle and only gets water, and very occasionally watered down juice, in her cup, and she is 10.5 months. She only has bottles before her naps and before bed now and just drinks from her sippy cup while she is eating and playing.
If you want to ease your DS into using a sippy cup maybe get a small one fill it with water and just leave it in a place he can get to easily. You'll find he will play with it for a bit and then realise he can drink from it and start to use it more often. DD always has one of her cups sitting on the coffee table so she can head over there and get a drink whenever she wants.

Try a Mag Mag....my bub had Nuby ones but couldnt work them out! The Mag Mag one was great, its soft spouted and easily comes out, much like a bottle. Also it does not spill.
Woolworths has them, so do chemists and you can get an attachment for a strw as bub gets older.

I've got the Mag Mag one, DD is just about to turn 1 and she has been using it for about 6 months now. I bought mine in Big W for about $17 and it comes with 3 attachments, the teat(we never used), the soft spout(the one we always use) and for when shes a little bit older the straw attachment. DD loves her mag mag, never had a problem with her using it.
Try it, you'll love it!

I bought one for DS when he was about 5 months old. Started with an Avent sippy.
First sippy I got DD was a Nuby one and it was weird, both kids hated it and refused to drink from it. Was so strange.
There are a dozen different kinds of Nuby sippies though, so its almost impossible to know which one works and which one doesn't.
DS also had a Playtex one, it was simple with handles on each side and a hard but rubber coated spout. Its lasted by far longer than any of the others and is STILL over 2 years later, completely spill-proof.
So if I buy any more, I'll be buying the playtex.
Thankyou for your responses everyone :)
And I agree, the baby nurse does seem to try and force bubs to grow up now that you mention it!

Unfortunately a LOT of health 'professionals' are like that.
Go with the flow, there is no harm whatsoever in having one with some water to offer if you think your little one would like a bit.
If he isn't interested, that's ok, he will be one day.

I don't use sippy cups, simply because I think it's easier to teach them to drink out of a normal cup straight away, and just skip the sippy cup-stage. My 3 year old started drinking out of a cup at about 9 months (until then he had a bottle). I'd hold it and gradually he started controlling it more and more. At about 1 year old he was able to drink on his own. I also had some cups with handles, so they're easier to hold.
My 9 month old is just starting now and is doing well! :yelclap:
Plastic cups are great though, they don't shatter the way glass does when they hit the floor...

We went from the breast to a sippy cup. DS was great at the change. He just slipped right into it. I think the way I did was the first time I put his fav drink (milk) in the sippy cup- bought it to the top and than let him go (he was lieing down so he didn't have to nessesarily tip it up). After that, he got the drift of the whole thing and could do it himself.
Otherwise, I really wouldn't be too fussed. I mean, he's only 7months old for goodness sake. I think you should tell the CHN to go and jump off the harbour bridge!

I introduced a sippy cup with my kids around 7-8 months just for water, they still had bottles til they were 12 months.
