I wanted to ask some advise. I ranted earlier about how the Mater wouldn't give me an IUD. They're also now telling me that metaformin is unnecessary because I'm not wanting to fall pregnant. and that for now "I'm not diabetic yet."

I thought it was for sorting out insulin resistance and avoiding diabetes? Am I wrong about this?

I've been singularly unimpressed by their "treatment" of he PCOS which to date has been zip.

wanting to bump this post and also ask if there are any recommendations for good PCOS dr's in Brisbane?

have you had a GTT done recently that showed impaired glucose tolerance (insulin resistance)? That's the only reason they'll give you metformin. As for the IUD I have no idea. We're TTC. Maybe do a bit of research and see if there is anything about the IUD that can cause issues with PCOS.

I was only ever seeing a gyno at RBWH. he wasn't very tactful but he was good and did know his stuff. They take a while to get into though. Aparently there is a good women's doctor in the city. Not sure of her name though sorry.

Hi there. I was told the same thing by my doctor. She said I was "borderline" (I'm assuming she means borderline diabetes or insulin resistant - don't know which one). My fasting glucose was 6 in my last test in January. I am due to see her again in about 3 weeks and she is testing me again. She said that if it was elevated compared to my test in January, she will get me to have the GTT. She also told me that because I'm not diabetic yet, I couldn't have metformin but if I wanted to conceive that she would give me something to help me. I don't know if she was talking about metformin or clomid. I guess I'll have to check with her when I see her next month.

I can understand your frustration because I feel the same way too. Another Aussie PCOS website was talking about lobbying the government to have metformin used as treatment for PCOS and not just diabetes. I haven't read anymore information on it though.

I'm a Queenslander too, so if you happen to get the name and number of a good PCOS doctor in Brisbane, please let me know. Depending on how things go with my doctor, I might look at seeing a PCOS specialist too.
