National recall on faulty cot

A national recall has been issued for a faulty cot that puts babies at risk of falling out.

IGC Dorel has told consumer affairs officials in Adelaide that it will recall the Mothers Choice Kensington cot to replace a faulty drop side.

The Chinese-made cot was sold between 2007 and 2008 at Kmart and Toys R Us stores but is not a current line.

Safety regulators found the vertical bars on the drop side could come out, allowing a child to roll or fall out.

South Australian Consumer Affairs Minister Gail Gago said an inspection found inconsistent manufacturing methods.

The vertical bars were of different sizes, some had inadequate glue applied while others had no glue at all.

Ms Gago said the recall was worrying given that a cot was supposed to be one of the safest items for babies.

"Suppliers and distributors need to be looking closely at the products they are selling to make sure they are fit for sale," she said.

"Consumers can reasonably expect cots to be durable and sturdily constructed.

"They'll be used regularly and should be manufactured to cope with such frequent use without problems."

It was unclear how many cots were affected by the recall.
