View Full Version : fleece or wool for nights?

Ok, so I've only been using PUL covers as DS was being changed so regularly being as he's only 11 weeks. Now he's starting to sleep that bit longer at night I think I need to brave the night nappy and cover combo.

I really don't know whether to go fleece or wool - wool seems like a bit of work but seems like it works better than fleece? Would love some advice and to hear what you all use. I think DS is on the heavier wetter side of the equation, if that makes a difference.

Also if I go wool I was looking at the disana cover, or in the fleece range a stacinator or bear bottoms - so would love opinions on which might be better.

Thanks :goodvibes:

I think I'm just retarded and don't know how to use wool properly because I hate washign them and lanolising them! Fleece is easy to throw in the washing machine.

I use fleece longies (flongies) or fleece covers coz of ease of wash and use. But that's me, I'm not sure if they're as breathable as wool.

I prefer wool at night because it's the most breathable of all covers. My Mum has knitted most of James's woolies though which has made it much cheaper (I think he must have about 8 pairs now). I do have some back up flongies though.

Thanks - still really unsure which way to go but am currently waiting on a KK AIO night nappy with the MM fleece outer so will see how that goes, fingers crossed!!

Just can't quite get my head around the idea of wool or fleece providing good leak protection - the evaporation idea does my head in. It just doesn't seem to make sense, however it seems to work for lots of you so I'll try it and see:)

Thanks again.

I have both types and I prefer the wool. DD is a big wetter and we nearly always get some compression wicking through the fleece (which I tend not to use very often now), and the wool covers are sometimes damp and moisture does get through, but because of the wool-lanolin-wicking thing it's not so stinky. I also was using a disana cover (before I washed it the machine and it got a bit smaller..oops) and I think that worked the best. The others I have are bbh ones which are ok.

At the moment I use a Tots Bots fleece cover (waiting for my Mum to finish knitting me some wool soakers) and that works great. I have to pin it on or put pants over though because DD pulls the velcro tabs off too easily. They have a double layer of fleece through the wet zone (such a silly sounding term) which helps prevent compression leaks.

DD is a heavy wetter (very heavy!) so I use a BBH bamboo fitted or Bubblebubs GNST nappy on her and then put a trifold between the cover and nappy, and she still manages to have the whole lot soaking by morning. He clothes and bedding is never wet with the fleece cover on though.

I think really it is a judgement call based on how it works with your bub. Maybe get one fleece and once wool cover and alternate each night to get an idea of how they work for you. You can always swap the one that doesn't work the best, or keep it for emergencys or naps. :)

I use BBH wool covers at night and they are fabulous. I lanolise them once before I use them for the first time and then they only need it very occasionally. I only wash them every second day or so because usually they can just be hung outside in the sunshine and don't smell at all. They are so much better at night than PUL which tend to get wet. I still can't believe how the moisture just seems to evaporate from the wool. I get amazed every morning :)
