I have recently started FF my 3 month old DS and I am not sure if the formula is agreeing with him or not. We are giving him S26 AR and while he does seem happier he does seem to be having a lot of weird 'chunky' type spews and today at 6pm he was still spewing up the medication I gave him at 1.30...

*TMI* his poos are also changing consistency and shades of green contstantly, but i wonder if this is cos he is still getting some breastmilk

So i was wondering if i would be better off using a gentler formula like karicare HA or Nan and putting some thickner in it?
Also how do you go about switching??

It can take about a week to tell if all is OK with a formula so if you've been using it for less than that it might be worth waiting to see how it turns out. If it's longer then it might be worth a change.

I found Karicare HA-AR the best. It was the only one I tried that after a few days on it stopped the vomitting (he'd done it since birth) and after I think a week his poo was not as runny. My son also gets eczema but it's a lot better whilst on this formula. It's not cheap but it's good. If you decide to use it buy it at the chemist cos it's always cheaper there than at the supermarket.

hes been on one feed a day for two weeks, but hes gone up to 2-3 for the last few days, do you think it sounds like its not agreeing with him?

S-26 tends to be rather notorious for it not agreeing with some babies ... Many are fine on it but many dont take to it very well at all.

Is there a reason as to why you are on AR ?

Its a reflux formula which means its thicker & harder for some to cope with also ... It can help many bubs that are spewy but overall it doesnt always help much iykwim !

As the pp said it can really take time to know whether bubs will cope on the formula ... Being that its heavier & harder to digest than breastmilk it takes time for the body & their little gut to accustomise to it all. So I would hang in there for a little longer if you are wanting to change over & give bubs time for things to settle.

If you do decide to change I would go with either the Karicare range or Heinz as my DS1 had those no issue at all whereas he couldnt cope with S-26 or NAN.

If you are wanting a formula thats gentler on the tummy & isnt as harsh then I advise a HA formula as its had some of it broken down so that its an option for kids with family allergy histories etc.

:iagree: My DD found S26 very hard to digest and ended up with major constipation on it. We changed her to Karicare HA and she has been fine with it. The HA formulas are hydrolised which as the PP said has the milk protien partially broken down.

Hes on the AR cos he has reflux, and DF bought it, thinking it was a magical cure  men are so simple sometimes

Anyways had I had the chance I would have chosen something different. Cos the more I read the more I find that the S26 formulas seem to be the ones that cause the most problems. I have persisted with it because I know they need time to adjust to the change. But the more he has the worse he seems to get.

I am wanting to change as i just really feel that it isnt the right one for him IYKWIM, but am scared to change cos i know its not really that good for them to jump from formula to formula, but from just 3 feeds a day his poo has become really thick and a lot harder to pass, so I think constipation will be a real issue when he ends up on it full time.

If I try they Karicare HA AR would that be likely to make him constipated too cos its thicker? Would I be best to just try the HA first? I'm not concerned about the cost. We had a lot of skin allergies in the family, but no food problems if that counts for anything?

I was told to try the Nan one when William was having some issues with formula. A few of my friends have said to use it as its gentler on there tummies and they don't get as much gas with it.
Good luck.

Oh, and thanks for the help guys, I really appreciated. I get so lost in the wealth of information that google provides me

if all else fails, get him checked out for lactose intolerance. A coworker of mine had a child with some of the symptoms you have described and found out that bubs is actually lactose intolerant.
switched him on to lactose free formula and bubs is very happy now.

Oh, i understand the pain, we are going through the formula overlaod as well.

i think the s26 is too harsh on his little tum, his tummy seems to be 'gurgling' all the time, so we changed him to the heinze nurture yesterday, he seems a bit spewy on it, but il see how we go over a few days, then maybe try the karicare?
complicated stuff....
