Hey there,

Is anyone out there taking medication for an underactive thyroid whilst breastfeeding?

My doctor says it's not an option until I stop breastfeeding but it's been 5 yrs now and I'm sick of the weight gain and mood swings - I want them to stop :hair:

Wondering if maybe I should see another doc to get another opinion.

Thanks!

Hi, I have been on thyroxine for an underactive thyroid for the past 6 years and in that time I have had two babies both of which I have breastfed. I did only breastfeed for 6 months but that didn't have anything to do with taking the medication.

See another Doc and quickly Phineas.

My story is pretty much identical to kikis3. I'm on 150mcg and was assured that it was completely safe to take whilst breastfeeding (as it is a hormone, not a chemical iykwim).

There are so many dangers with letting your thyroid get out of control, apart from simply making you feel like cr@p - please see another Dr.:hugs:

I take thyroxine daily and all my health professionals know that I am taking it and BFing (GP, Ob, Endocronologist, Lactation consultat, Child health nurse) and not one of them has ever told me I shouldn't take it during BFing. I think it is important that you get back on your medication so please get another opinion.

Good luck... Cee

Definitely see another doctor, I have been taking thyroxine throughout my pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding 200mg per day my daughter is 9 weeks old. All my doctors - o.b. physician specialist and 2 x GPs have prescribed as above.

Agreeing with everyone else here!!!

Don't listen to this stupid doctor!

If you don't get your medicine your organs can shut down, and well, good luck with feeding because it probably won't happen... so you need to take it! It controls organ function, metabolism and an array of other important bodily functions.

:iagree: with everyone else too! I'm on 150mg daily and have never been told it isn't safe, rather the opposite!

I realise this is an older post, I really hope you've taken some of the PPs advice and gotten a second opinion. Good luck :hugs:.
