View Full Version : Not pooing for a week!!
My 3.5 month old son has a pretty wet nappy at every nappy change but he hasn't pooed for over a week!! The last time he did poo it was quite runny and that was after about a week of no poo as well. He does fart a lot too!!
Is this normal or should i see someone about it?

Hi
In her "Baby Love" book, Robin Barker says it's normal for breastfed babies to poo anywhere from every day to 3 weeks apart! I think it's different for babies on formula though (please correct me if I'm wrong!)... My (breastfed) 3.5 month old has just started to poo on a more regular basis - every day after the breakfast feed - she's done that for about 5 days. Before that though, it would be maybe every 5-6 days... And as far the farting - oh yes!!! Sometimes I think she could jet propel herself across the room!! And the smell aint pretty - LOL!!!
Cheers!

My daughter Raleigh (3mo) is going through exactly the same thing. She might poo once a week if I'm lucky. She farts a lot too. I think its just the breastfed baby thing. Most of the time she saves up her poos for DH and he gets to change her. His only complaint is that he goes through at least a dozen wipes to clean it up LOL :D
My bub is 4.5 months old and on formula, he poops every 3/4 days and its soft (mmm nice). I checked with dr and she agreed with robin barker, as long as poo is soft and NOT dry pebbles its all good. As for not going everyday she said bub is taking all nutrients and not leaving excess to poo out. If I'm worried I just give 20mls prune juice diluted in water and that usually gets a movement.
Hi
Madvoice, you made me laugh about Raleigh saving poos for DH.. I have a rule at home - Dad does "poo duty" on weekends - even if there's more than 1 a day!! I think it's fair! :D
Cheers!
Thanks guys. Coban is breastfed so i feel a little better about things now!! I only started to worry when i mentioned it to my MIL and she seemed to think that it was bad and that i should see someone about it.
I think i will just ignore her. LOL
When my son was breastfeed he went just over 3 weeks without a poo !! I started to fret at about 2 weeks and saw my Gp, she asked me how long and when i said 2 weeks she just laughed and said "enjoy it, it wont last forever!!" hehe She was right. Apparently its almost 4 weeks before you should worry when it comes to pure breastfed babies...
Hi,
My boy started off being breastfed for the first 4 weeks then went to formula and I had the same problem. He would go every day on breast milk but as soon as he was introduced to formula (karicare gold) , he would only go every 1-2 days and with a struggle.
I spoke with my specialist about this and he reckoned it was normal for babies to be like this and sometimes they could go up to 2 weeks without any movements.
Also, some of the formula milk is concentrated and can have an affect on it too. The Dr suggested to add a little more water to each bottle and if I was concerned, to get some drops from the chemist. They are called "Coloxyl Drops" for infants (over the counter) - it helps soften their poo so they can go. I have used it every now and then when he seems to struggle or get cramps.
I have only just recently changed brands with the formula and this has helped my little man heaps.

Well Ladies,
I think talking about it has brought it on!! :p
Last night he finally pooed and OMG... How i wished he hadn't. LOL :D
Now that i know that nothing is wrong, i am going to make the most of it as i know that it won't last forever. :D
