I just don't get it, all the research I've done on the internet has shown me it can take up to a couple of years to get AF back when BF! I had to go to emergency last night cause i was really :barf: and the doctor asked if I could be PG and when I had my last AF, when I told him i hadn't and that my baby is just 9mths and i'm still BF; he insisted that that is very unusual and made me promise to get tested at my GP! In the past, my GP was telling me it was nothing to worry about cos of BF! And the emergency doctor said it so so important to get it checked out if i wanted to have more chn in the future:eek:
Is he just completely ignorant or what?

Borntobemummy,
I would get it checked out with your normal GP let him/her know what happened!
But I have NEVER EVER heard of that being the case....plenty of women don't get their period until they stop breastfeeding all together and even then it can be a few months after.

Is it possible you might be preggas?

Hope all goes well and you start to feel better.

sounds totally ignorant to me- I know lots of ladies that don't get their period back for years- though you can still ovulate while you are breastfeeding- so just because you aren't getting AF doesn't mean you can't fall pregnant!

Hope you are feeling better soon!

Hi borntobemummy,

I think the doctor might have been a bit clueless. Its common for menstruation to return when your baby either starts sleeping through the night, or starts eating more solids, or around 6 months. But it changes so much from woman to woman. If you're still breastfeeding I don't think there's a concern - it might become a concern if you weren't feeding anymore and several months later your periods hadn't returned!

BTW it is possible to fall pg before your period returns, because you ovulated 2 weeks before you menstruate (approx.) so you might ovulate and fall pregnant before even knowing you ovulated.

I'm not a doctor, so the advice I've given above is only from my own experience, and talking to lots of other mums, but I don't understand why the doctor at the hospital would have been so concerned about something that, to the best of my knowledge, is pretty commonplace!

Yeah, so weird hey! I do think i could be PG at the moment, just waiting to test.
He even said you can't get pregnant (meaning vulate) but you should get you periods!!

In the meantime that Dr sounded like he didn't know what he was talking about. I didn't have a period between DD1 and DD2 - I ovulated once at 11 months and fell pregnant. With DD2 I didn't ovulate until 13 months - and my OB has no problem with that at all - and he is an infertility specialist and I have previously had fertility treatment, so if there was an issue he would have raised it.

And since when do you not ovulate but have periods when bf - the two are tied together unless you are on the pill! Sounds like a bit of a nutter.

Meanwhile - hope you feel better!

Well, that's just ignorant of him. People DO get pregnant before getting their first period (my SIL for one). I got AF back 10 months after DD1 was born, and with DD2 I'm currently 8 months and counting, so I think he's full of it!

Well, I did the test this morning with FMU! and i was BFN:no: just don't get it, I have so many symptoms, I just want to know what's going on with my body. It even hurts to breastfeed now, it never has before! So frustrating!!:banghead:

Could he have meant it was important to get tested in case you needed medication for the :barf:  Why not get a blood test done and hopefully that will clear things up.

I'm struggling to understand this dr. If you went in with severe vomitting why didn't he do a pregnancy test there and then. I went in about 18months ago with palpitations which I normally only get when pregnant. When I told the dr this he added pregnancy test to all the other tests he did. Did he have anything to offer you?

yes it was a man! And he was really mean too - like "what are you here for?" He gave me an injection of stemzine for the nausea, my arm still hurts from it:( And no, he didn't do a PG test, though i told him I had done one that afternoon BFN, but with a cheap ebay test - don't know if that makes any difference?? It's hard for me to find time to go to the doctors, so we'll see what happens - still got one more HPT, might just wait another week or so. I still feel bleehh, but not enogh to :barf:

No period while breastfeeding is perfectly normal. Often it doesn't come back until you have stopped breastfeeding or are only producing a small amount of milk. I didn't get mine until my son was 13 months, a month after my son dropped down to two breast feeds a day.

I BF DS until he was 11 months old and only just got my AF in jan this year ( he was 14 months old ) mums a midwife and said that its pretty normal. I would still go to your GP and get a test done just to be sure .

GOOD LUCK
