Strange bleeding?

My DD is 5 weeks old now. For the last two weeks my bleeding has been slowly stopping, it went yellow and then the last few days it has been white, like normal discharge. But today it has gone dark red again :confused: I haven't had any cramping or anything, and it's not a large amount of blood. I'm breastfeeding, but could it be the return of my period?

Thanks for your email. As you gave birth only 5 weeks ago I suspect that the appearance of blood again at this stage is a continuation of lochia. Breastfeeding stimulates contraction of the uterus, these contractions can help to expel lochia.

I think it is too early for this to be your period, if you have resumed sex you may want to take precautions just in case.

If you experience pain, fever or a feeling of being generally unwell see your doctor straight away.
