My daughter is 21 months. She has had abdominal distension for approx. 6-12 months. Have queried on a couple of occasions with paed. but upon examination of abdomen she had no signs of organ enlargement and was otherwise healthy. Call it mother's instinct or whatever but still felt there was an underlying problem. Recently she has had intermittent diarrhoea and vomiting and her abdomen is worse than ever. She is off her food and irritable. Because the paed is so hard to get into, I took her to our GP who also seemed concerned and sent us off for an ultrasound. Faeces samples have also been sent to pathology. Although we are waiting on pathology results, the ultrasound showed some distension of small bowel loops and suggested that an obstruction be considered.

I am feeling really worried (scared is probably more accurate) and wonder if anyone has or is dealing with similar. Please help.

My little guy has had a few various issues since he was born & has had an obstruction due to fecal compaction .... He has a very lazy bowel which is too large for him atm so it loops too much causing it to hold onto the waste much more easier than most. He does also have issues with dairy, soy & fruit.

Because of this we use Movicol daily to make sure he clears everything & when it gets bad we start doubling the dosages & using suppositories to make sure it all gets cleared so that he doesnt get compacted again.

The problem is palpatating the abdomen doesnt always give you a clear indication of whats going on unless you really know what you are looking for & sadly as great as some Paeds are they oftne dont do it correctly. My little guys GI pushes down so far it freaks you out lol & then he follows the bowel along but even he knows his limitations & uses xrays & u/s to his advantages for obvious reasons !

Its good that you got an u/s done as this means you can then push to have things looked at further ... I would suggest seeing a Paediatric GI if your Paed is unhelpful as there sounds like there may be a few things going on.

Cealiacs is one thing as are intolerances to the likes of dairy & soy which could cause her system to react in this manner.

Good luck hope you get some answers soon :hugs:

Thanks alot for responding. The GP should have the pathology results tomorrow so that's a start at least. Then we are hopeful to be squeezed into the Paed's schedule (the only one in our region - there's drawbacks to living in the country). My husband and I are seriously considering pushing for referrals to specialists in Brisbane despite the 5 hour transit. At least this way, we can see the right people.

This will mean now that you can deal with it & have her living without the pain etc ...

Whilst it seems daunting it isnt too bad adjusting her diet etc !

Good luck !
