Any playgroups in Cairns?

Hi,

I've just moved to back to Cairns from Melbourne. I was from Cairns originally but have been away for about five years. Anyway, I have lost touch with all my old friends and I don't know any mothers.

Are there any good playgroups or mothers' groups in Cairns which would welcome a new mummy? I have a nine month son, Cameron and we're looking forward to making new friends!

I don't know of any mother's groups etc except ABA and perhaps through Comm Health (corner Brown St/Mulgrave Road opp Hungary Jacks next to Bendigo Bank) - I'm not a member of any. Apparently there is a pram-ercise class on the esplanade on Mondays at 9.15 only found out about it today so can't give an opinion...
Let me know if you find one, feeling a bit deserted when DH goes off to work each day! (ANYTHING is better than washing LOL)

I remember you said you lived in Park Ridge. I'm sure I saw on the Playgroups Queensland website that there is a playgroup in Loridan Drive (or thereabouts) so that's probably the closest one near you. Do a google and I bet you'll find one, there are heaps of playgroups in Cairns... there's a small one where I live at Kewarra Beach as well, but I'm not planning on joining until my daughter is a bit older. I'm happy with my mother's group for now as all the bubs are around three months of age and aren't interracting with each other yet... it's more of a social outing for the mums! :D

By the way, a few of us mums are trying to start Pramercise in the Smithfield and Northern Beaches area (in order to avoid travelling into Cairns due to high petrol costs and parking fees) but we need mums to sign up first in order to get the trainer to work out a route and set a day/time. So far we've got 11 mums signed up, but we need a minimum of 16... so if anyone out there lives in the area (or knows of a mum who does) please send me a PM so we can get in touch! THANKS!

Thanks for the info! I did just as you suggested a couple of days ago and I did find the Playgroups Australia website. You are right, there are a few playgrounds a few minutes drive away from me. I called one of them and all the kiddies there at that particular one are toddler age so I thought I'd give it a miss until Cameron's able to walk and run around.

I'm actually already going to pramercise. The city council sponsors it on Mondays so it's perfect for lil ol' cheapskate me. I'll let the other mum's know on Monday when I see them just in case any of them live out that way. But if you don't manage to get pramercise up and running, maybe you and the other mums can come out on Monday mornings... it's free which makes up for the half-way-to-ridiculous petrol prices (i believe the pramercise sessions are about $7?).... Let me know if you come along !

I know there is a playgroup that meets at the woree community centre on toogood road on a wednesday morning i would love to go as its down the road but i am working and by the time i have finished they are all packed up. I seen a few ladies there.

I just moved to Woree with DH from NZ. Would love to make some friends in the area. We have a little girl Eden who turned 1 last weekend....can't believe it happened so fast! AND we're 12w 4d into number two :p

I'm so thrilled to hear there's a local playgroup. Do you know what time they meet? If your interested, I'd love to catch up some time (especially since you can't make the Wednesday playgroup?)
