At 35 weeks I had a urine infection caused by strep b and have been told that because of this I will need to be treated as GBS+ during my labour.
My question is like it says in the title - has anyone been GBS+ had their waters break without going into labour?
If so what did you do?
I've been told 3 different things by 3 different people - two midwives and one doctor.
I've been given oral antibotics that I was told by the doctor that I could take for up to 12 hours if I didn't go into labour straight away, a midwife told me that I could wait up to 24 hours and the other said I would need to be induced straight away.
So as you can imagine I'm completely confussed. I want to do whats the safest thing for my baby, and there's risks due to me being gbs positive and there's also risks of being induced.
In the end its up to me what I want to do - be induced straight away or wait and see if I go into labour within a time frame but I can't find a lot of information on this exact thing.

try to research as much as you can before you make any decisions. Treating gbs with antibiotics has not been proven to affect the outcomes of maternal or neonatal health. Not all hospitals routinely do swabs for gbs, if a complication should arise (which is extremely rare) it will be picked up once the baby is born and can be treated then.
And in answer to your question, my waters broke before labour with DS1 and we ended up holding out for 3 days before we ended with a c/s because the labour just did not start at all by that point.

Hi

I supported a woman whose waters broke at 28weeks and she didn't go into labour until they induced at her at 37weeks. However she didn't have strep B. You don't necessarily have to go into labour if your waters break spontaneously - the amniotic fluid keeps replenishing itself every 3 hours. ("dry births" are an old wives tale/myth).
And strep B is very controversial - it's like borntobemummy says, some places routine swab for it and others don't. I know women who have tested positive for it one week and negative 2 weeks later. Try and find lots of research on it.

Thanks ladys,
I've been trying to find what information I can on the internet and I've also asked DH to see if he can find anything but it seems like there's nothing about what can happen and what is recommended if my waters break with no other signs of labour.
I know the chances of this happening aren't high but it happened to my mum with both her pregnancy's - although they didn't test for GBS back then.
All I can find is that your baby is at higher risk if you waters break and you do not give birth within 18 hours and that oral anitbiotics are not proven to help reduce the risks of me passing it onto my baby.....but then you look at the risks of being induced and they seem more likely to occur...
I'm not very good with what if's...I like facts and figures and when they're not there I find it stressful :(

i was gbs positive in my second pregnancy ( i know in qld they don't even test for it also in some nsw hospitals they make you swab both holes others just one) Anyway I had a fast labour and they were trying to put the canula into my hand and gbs antiboitics as I was pushing to have ds. So i doubt whether there was time for them to go through. They just monitor bub n keep an eye on them for any breathing difficulkts. I think the risk of anything is low given some hospitals dont even test for it. I personally was and wouldnt be to worried bout it

Hi there,
it might be worth getting a second (? fourth) opinion from a private midwife in Melbourne ... it's probably best that the person who gives you advice also sees you and assesses you. Just my opinion there.

Last year my waters broke at 33 weeks, i didnt go into labor , I was kept in hospital a week given antobiotics and needles for the babies lungs and told i would be in until 37 weeks then induced.... needless to say I got a infection in the waters and at 34 weeks I was induced... I had a healthy yet small baby who weighed 2.2kgs he didnt need help breathing or sucking infact he breast fed straight away... just stayed in neonatal ward for 2 weeks due to his size... I brought him home weighed 2.3kgs he ended up putting on 500g in 2 days at home which was a relief.

Best of luck with it all.... so yes you can have your waters break and not go into labor.
