Hi,
I am wondering how many of you who had gestational diabetes had their baby admitted to the special care nursery afterwards. Or were they able to stay with you?

I am guessing it varies from hospital to hospital but I know one of my friends just said she would take the baby to the nursery to get their BSL done every 4 hours and they were fine with that.

Maybe it depends on how well your diabetes had been controlled too....thinking out aloud now..should call the hospital and ask them I guess.

TIA. Jo

Called the hospital...

The middy I spoke to said they have no strict policy and it will be up to the paed who is at the birth and the BSL of the baby when they're born.

Yay! I didn't really want my newborn taken away from me unnecessarily.

I had GD with DS2 and he arrived 3 and a half weeks early. Luckily he was able to stay with me and they even did his BSLs in my room too, they never had to take him to the nursery. You're right though, it might vary between hospitals so maybe give them a call to find out for sure :)

My DS's blood sugars were taken regularly during the first 24 hours but in my room. He did go about 12 hours after he was born for about an hour, but I went with him. They really didn't do anything that they couldn't have done in my room. I actually asked my Endocrinologist yesterday about it and he told me that there really is no reason that this bub should have to be taken away because of low sugars. He should just be fed and monitored.

I had GD - maintained with diet alone and they didn't ever test my DD at all.
They tested me just before my c-section and my reading was 4.3 so I'm not sure if that had anything to do with it and she came out at 36.5 weeks just perfect.

I had diet controlled GD with DS. I was told that if I had needed insulin, then DS would have been taken to the nursery for monitoring, but because it was diet conrolled they would test ds 1hr after birth and after each feed until he had 3 readings less than 4. I was also told that he would have to be given comp formula feeds to help raise his bsl if it was low (never happened).
The midwives always tested his bsl in my room.

Thanks for your replies.

I have diet controlled GD too. Interesting to hear that nobody has gone to the SCN.

Looks like things should be fine for us. Thanks again guys.

I had diet controlled GD in both my pregnancys, DD1 was born prem due to another illness but DD2 was born 4 weeks ago at 39 weeks by c/sec and they never checked her sugars, she came straight to my room with DF until I got there and then she stayed with me. My reading before my surgery was 4.1 so I guess they figured it wasnt neccessary but I never asked. We both went home the next day anyway.
