I will be making an appointment to see my doctor but most likely wont be able to get in before Friday.

I gave birth 6 months ago, very quick labor. No painful contractions and I was 8 cm when I went for a check up with OB. Baby born 1.5 hrs later. No tearing but a slight graze requiring one stitch to stop bleeding. Sex has been uncomfortable since but improving over time. My six week check up was fine, OB only commented on some scar tissue. Everything in the genital area has looked normal until last night. I can now see an area of tissue in my vaginal opening that has never been there before. ( something looks swollen from the inside) I assume this is a prolapse, I don't have any other symptoms.

Should I be trying to get into a doctor earlier than Friday, or is there anything I should be doing at home until then to improve the situation. I have started doing pelvic floor exercises every few hours.

Will pelvic floor exercises help move things back into place or just reduce further displacement?

Thanks for your help in advance.

Dear lmk,

I can understand that you are concerned by your recent discovery. :(

It sounds like you had a relativley quick labour and apart from the one stich no real post birth complications.

You mentioned that sex had been uncomfortable, but was slowly improving. Do you have any other symtpoms such as feeling pressure in the perineum or vagina, frequent urination?

It is possible that you have a prolapse and I advise that you see your doctor as soon as you can for a proper diagnosis.

Prolapse is not uncommon after birth. Pelvic floor exercises help to strengthen the muscles on the floor of the pelvis, keep our reproductive organs in place and help with bladder and bowel control.

If you are currently performing pelvic floor exercises you may want to do them lying down with the pelvis slightly tilted up. Unfortunately pelvic floor exercises need time to work! So keep doing your exerices, avoid lifting anything heavier than your baby and get in to see you doctor as soon as you can.

If it is a prolapse there are physiotherapists who specialize in pelvic floor who can help you. Your doctor will be able to refer you.

All the very best.
