View Full Version : bottle teats and feed length
2 things really - actually related to one another but anyway... I'm wondering about teat flows. My 5 month old son is on the avent number 1 teat and it takes him about 20 mins to finish a 150-200ml bottle of formula or 10-15 of expressed breastmilk. I have tried putting him up to a number 2 - and the liquid seems to dribble out the sides of his mouth and it looks and sounds like for all intensive purposes like he is gulping and obviously the bottle time is cut down substantially. He seems ok after a feed - although does tend to vomit a bit more on a faster teat - but perhaps that is because he is not used to it.
Any advice would be appreciated......
i was using the avent teats, my bub is 4.5 months and went between the 2 and 3 on the variable teat option. I have changed as the avent teat is so rigid. I now use the pigeon (Y) teat, it is super flexible and bub has to draw it back like they do a nipple. You can buy them at Pricelines or online from www.babyshop.com.au
I have noticed he is not as windy with these teats as the mouth closes around it better.
I also use the pigeon teats and find them fantastic, bubba has just moved up to the y teat at 4.5 months. I find the pigeon nipples to be very soft and flexible compared to some of the others out there.
Hey mumma jack, I just noticed that your little boy is just 1 day older than my d.d
I used pur orthodontic teats for my son right from the start. He was taking anything up to 45mins to finish 200mls. I didn't worry about changing teats coz i was told that up to 45 mins is normal for some bubs, and he wasn't having any problems with wind or anything else. As he got older he did get a bit quicker at finishing his bottles, but he always took longer than most other bubs I knew.
Hi
Sorry to highjack this thread, but I have a Q re the Pigeon teats... Do they fit the Avent bottles? I'm having trouble getting my 3 1/s month old to take the bottle - thought maybe the Pigeon teats were the way to go...
Thanks - sorry again Lucyp! :o
Cheers!
yep, they fit avent bottles or most wide neck bottles. I use some teats on avent but when i ordered more teats i bought a few pigeon bottles. I prefer avent as they are wider and therefore shorter (much easier to clean). The pigeon bottles are narrow and long. Just using the avent is easier as you can still use all the caps etc for milk on the go!
Hi Miranda,
yes the pigeon teats do fit the avent bottles, but they dont make a really tight seal. When the lid is placed on the avent bottle, the pigeon teat doesnt quite reach the top, leaving room for leaks and spills when you shake up the bottle (hope that makes sense)
