Hello all:wave:

I have a safe 'n' sound baby capsule- you know the grey ones that you can hire from the ambulance service... I brought it when I got my cot and change table. Its in prefect condition the straps are not freyed or anything.

The manafacture date on it is 1997 and someone told me that the capsules have an expirey date- that they shouldnt be used past a certain number of years. Does anyone know if this is true and if so how many years????

Also do you think it would be a wise idea to use it or not?? Im just not sure(being a first time mum and all) and wanted to get your opinions first....

Oh and does anyone know how they are fitted into the car PROPERLY- Im sure I could work it out(didnt come with instructions) but I dont want to risk my little ones saftey....

Thanks all:hugs:

Ive never heard about an expiry date, however I suppose that standards change over time so my best advice would be to take the capsule to a fitting station and get it checked out.

You can find a fitting sastion near you by contacting your local RTA:thumbsup:

Thanks Nemosmum- I had pretty much decided I would take it to a fitting station I want to make sure its right.

A friend also told me that you can take them to your local ambulance station and they will check them to see if they are installed properly.....

Hi Adele,

You shouldn't use a capsule that is more than 10 years old. It is also important to know the history of the capsule, such as if it has ever been involved in an accident, as this can compromise the strength and safety of the capsule.

If in doubt, don't use the capsule. If you don't want to buy one, you can look into hiring one instead.

Yes it is a maximum of 10 years. I would probably be on the safe side and just hire one as the ones you hire are pretty good and clean and get replaced frequently.

Hi,

I might be a bit late in posting. But I would definitely try your little one sitting in the capsule first before installing it into your car.

We actually hired 2 safe-n-sound capsules from the Ambulance thinking this was the safest way to transport our ds. It also helped transporting him in and out of the car to places.

Everytime we put ds in or out of the capsule he would scream/cry and this was the only time he would do this. He absolutely hated the capsules, which was bad news for us.

A waste of money hiring at $57 for each capsule for 6 months, the capsules are now sitting on floor in the garage waiting for the 6 month expiry to come, due to
the Ambulance refusing to refund any of our money. We ended up buying reversible car seats for each car and had no problems since.

The old style grey safe and sound capsules you are talking about, are actually not good for babies spines. My chiropractor told me to get my bub out of it asap (luckily it was a hire one). They are a different shape to reversible car seats and the newer style capsules that have just the one handle. They are curved so there's no support for bubs back, if you take the insert out, you will be able to see what i mean.

This is my third bub, and all of my babies are slow growers, so if I had known sooner I would have spent the extra money and bought the newer style one. As I have a child in school and kindy I am in and out of the car constantly, so keeping bub in the capsule is very handy.

My dd who is now 3 1/2 mths, screamed the whole time she was in the hire capsule until she was 7wks and she had treatment at the chiropractor.

My advice is, if you lead a busy lifestyle of getting in/out the car numerous times a day, buy a new style capsule (or hire one if they are available, they arn't where we live) but if you arn't planning on being out and about every day, use the extra $$ and get a good reversible car seat.

Oops, I just noticed the date of your posting your question, so I am probably too late, that's what you get for getting on the computer late at night:laughing: but as we mums know, its the only time we have some quiet time to get anything done!!

I hope you sorted it all out Country Bumpkin!!:)
