:banghead::hissy::crying:

Ok so everyone knows what head lice are and that they can be extremely expensive and time consuming to treat. Not to mention traumatic for the child. And damaging on their hair.

I have to treat my hair every time i do my daughters.

My girls do not go to day care, DD1 has ballet on monday mornings and both DD's go to the gym creche' and on occasion we go go to play group. I have notified the two main places of the constant occurance of the head lice in my daughters hair but we STILL seem to pick the little buggers up from somewhere....

So anyway Here is my idea...

Lets get the word out for a

NATIONAL TREAT YOUR CHILDREN FOR HEAD LICE DAY!!!!

Lets email tv shows and news papers and get the word out there!!!!

I am sick of it as I am sure are many other parents doing the right thing by treating their childrens hair only to catch them again.

IDEAS PLEASE!!! Dates and how to get it up and running...

Natural cheap ways for everyone to do their childrens hair. Or maybe some sort of funding from the comapanies to send out a free bottle to every family....

I've resorted to shaving my DS1's hair off at the start of each school term :crying: It gets that bad when they're in school.

Cheap white conditioner and a lice comb are what I swear by.

My DD1 has started kindy this year and I'm abolutely terrified and dreading the day she gets headlice! :crying: I've bought her a leave in spray called "Nit defence" and I spray this in her hair every morning before kindy. Oh and I chekc her hair like crazy everyday!!!!

I think another good idea is to list any tips that anyone knows of for preventing headlice!!:)

May not be as bad at your school Linda  There was obviously a child that was going un treated in Zac's class though. It got to the point where he missed at least 1 day of school a week because he'd picked them up again.
It used to annoy me when he was in Pre Primary that they make the kids keep their hats in a big bucket together rather than in their bags. This wouldn't have helped the problem.

He hasn't had any head lice in about 12mnths since I first shved his head lol.

Also with girls you can tie their hair back nice and tightly where as with boys you cant (well I can with Kai but not Zac lol).

But the conditioner wont kill the eggs, does the tea tre oil?

like if you miss ONE single egg, then you run the risk of another outbreak

Amen!!!

If everyone just treated their kids (and themselves) properly we wouldn't have it going around in circles!

thankfully DD hasn't had them for a while but there was one year of school that I treated her nearly every week.. and all because or 1 maybe 2 kids in the class whose parents just wouldn't treat them.. grrr

i still comb my hair out, because no the conditioner and tea tree oil don't kill the eggs (as far as i'm aware)

but i just do it regularly. if you do it every 3 days, it'll kill the eggs as they hatch, before they have a chance to lay more eggs.

and i just do it every time i start to feel like they might be coming back.

also, all this talk of headlice is making my head itch something fierce :(

DS has had lice once - and I swore we'd never have them again.

My kids get their hair sprayed each morning with a home made treatment - water, a squeeze of leave in conditioner, a few drops of lavendar oil and tea tree oil - after 6 years we've never had lice again.

I also spray their hats regular with euclyptus oil and wipe around inside the brim with tea tree oil.

Please also remember to clean the car - you bring your kids home, see they have lice, run around like crazy treating the kids and washing hats brushes and linen and put the kids back in the car the next day....

An adult louse can live 24 hours off the human body. They can't jump or fly - they can only crawl.

They love clean hair and don't like leave-in conditioner as it makes the hair shaft sticky and slipery and they also can't latch on properly

AAHHHH nits YUK as a hairdresser i hate them with a pasion the amount of parents that think they can get rid of nits with a ten minute wash i the shower YOU ARE BLOODY DREAMING it takes hours

To get rid of nits properly you need to not only kill the nits but remove EVERY SINGLE EGG, The best way I found to do this was wiith PPS Fried lice leave it on the for required amount of time then rinse it

Then here is the vital and hard part, you need to bruch through the hair then section the hair into 4 sections 2 front 2 back then you need to start at the bottom and section the hair bit by bit into sections no thicker then a cm, then spray the fried lice detangler ( it will loosen the eggs) then go through with the thin D egging come and get out ever soletry egg, the ones you cant brush out pick with your nails, yuk i know but it works

As a hairdresser doing this to my cousins hair it took me hours im not kidding you need to do it proplerly, once you have done this goo though again to make sure

then you need to antiback everything in the house, the couch the brushed the pillow everything and even put some antibac in the washing for a week or so to rid it from the towels

then once they are gone, for school ballet or anything make sure the hair is tied back seceurely and plated if posible soo there are NO stray hair, If you are really seroiuos about them not geting it again its a good idea to coat the hair in hairspray so the little suckers cant get through

Now I know some wont like this method as its not natural and thats fine but for the ones that just want to fid the lice maybe give it a go

This is why you dont just do it once. You need to do it every night for at least a week.

If I remember correctly, lice have a 2wk cycle.

The conditioner stuns the adult lice long enough to comb them out and it loosens the glue holding the eggs on so they are easier to comb out. Tea Tree Oil is a preventative.

We're doing a nitz blitz at school.

This is what we're doing, and it's working so far:

If only there was a way to make parents check their kids hair & treat it if need be... I remember at school there was one family who had lice constantly. At the time he principal was allowed to check every kids hair. Without fail, each check these kids always had them. Their parents just could be bothered treating them

LOL, my comment to reply would be: "at least you can shave a boys head":p:laughing:.

After 2 weeks on holiday (no lice in site) she was back at daycare and school for 2 days before catching a headful. This is with hair tied back at 3 points on her head. Treated Thursday (when I noticed them) and yesterday when I checked again, another head full of the tiny buggers.Arrrrgh:hair:. If she comes home again with them today I'm going to spit chips.

I've tried everything: dirty hair, preventers, mix of conditioner, water & tee tree oil, hair up, nothing stops the buggers.

My DD1 is now nearly 14yo and we have been dealing with headlice since she was 2yo.
The best way I have found to treat her hair now is to do the whole white conditioner thing first, comb out as many of the little blighters as possible then rinse the hair. Allow to dry a fair bit then soak the hair in white vinegar. The vinegar works to break the cement the lice have on the eggs attached to the hair shaft. Comb again with a good quality metal lice comb. Do this regularly and hopefully the lice problem will be gone. Also spray a solution of water, lavender and teatree oil in the hair EVERY morning to prevent reinfestation.

Did you treat your car though? You may have re-infected yourself. They can live 24 hours off the human body, and will crawl onto car seats, and then crawl back on the next morning

I will definitely be involved in any initiative to eradicate head lice forever! They are such disgusting little pests.

I have no tips on getting rid of them. My mum used to use crawly cruncher (yes a hardcore pesticide) mixed with conditioner & it worked a treat. I recently tried it again then read the back of the bottle & the warnings were severe about putting it on your skin. I am completely freaked out now, clearly my mum wasn't too concerned about the chemicals

BTW I do not recommend what my mum did.

Oh & that KP26 or whatever it's called is crap on my thick hair. And it just pours everywhere when you try & apply it. Can anyone recommend any of those nit products?

I have NEVER had to deal with head lice yet

My provention trick is....
-I only wash the kids hair on a friday night...they never go to school/kindy with clean hair.
-The kids get hairspray and mousse in their hair daily...and I also LOVE the 'natural oils spray' from de lorenzo which I put in the kids hair every monday.
-The kids know NEVER to play "hair games", or swap hats ect.
-The girls always have their hair up.

=10 yrs and NO head lice :yelclap:

No it doesn't kill the eggs but the idea is to do the conditioner and comb the eggs out then repeat this after a couple of days.

I swear by the conditioner method treatments do not always work:no: and you STILL have the eggs left over so it makes no difference.

Conditioner is the best way in my opinion as it is much safer than harsh chemicals and much easier to comb through:thumbsup::thumbsup:

2'snuff It sounds as if you have still left eggs as a head full of little ones sounds like they are hatching AFTER THE TREATMENT. To get a head full that quick wouldn't happen unless you are literally laying rubbing heads for a long period of time. Usually most kids get one adult lice that lays a whole heap of nits and then they hatch but that takes a good week. Yours are happening much to quickly
