Well after quite a bit of research and consideration I decided to buy an Ergo. The baby shop finally got them in and I did an hour long trip just to purchase one a few days ago .

I LOVE it!!! Ds has been sick and I can't believe how easy it is to put on, and how comfy it is! Ds loves it too!!

Havent yet figured out how to get him on my back alone lol.

They're fantastic, aren't they! :D

DS is now nearly 9.5 months old and nearly 10kg and it's still as comfy as when I started wearing it, way back when :D

I was thinking about getting some sort of carrier and I also keep hearing good things about the Ergo. Tam-I-Am, I didn't realise youcould use them for that long and still be comfy. Have you tried a Baby Bjorn on before to compare? I would be interested to know... sorry to hijack your thread!

Hey sparksgirl, I originally bought a baby bjorn with back support when I was pregnant. While Ds was a newborn and infant it was fantastic... however once he began to gain weight I found it would cut in on my shoulder, was very front heavy and began to hurt my neck and back.

The ergo is much more padded and evenly distrubutes the weight. Ds is already 10kgs and yet 2day I happily vacuumed, hung out the washing etc with him on my back. His been really sick, and just snuggles in without a sound whenever his in the ergo.

The best thing is that he can go on my front back or side now .

you cannot compare the 2 of them
the ergo is a million times better than theaby back breaker!

i still wear my DS1 who is over 2 on my back and it doesnt hurt!

the ergo is a millions times better for the bubs hips because of the way it sits!
the baby bjorn hangs your baby from its spine putting all its weight on the spine!
bub literally dangles there

The ERGO baby carrier's ergonomic design supports a correct sitting position for the baby's hip, pelvis and spine growth. It disperses most of the baby's weight between the hips and thighs, which helps to eliminate compression of the spine when hanging by the crotch which most other designs require. The ERGO also balances the baby's weight to parents' hips and shoulders, and alleviates physical stress for the parent.

There are two big design differences between the Baby Bjorn and The New Generation Ergo Baby Carrier. One affects the comfort of the adult and the other affects the comfort of the baby. The Baby Bjorn straps place all the baby's weight on your upper back and shoulders. As any hiker knows, it is much better to carry extra weight on your hips and that is why any decent backpack has a hip belt. The New Generation Ergo Baby Carrier has a hip belt and it makes a huge difference - much more comfortable for you!

The second big design difference addresses the comfort of your baby. The ERGO supports the baby in a natural, seated position which does not put strain on the crotch or spine. Even if you don't feel this is a valid concern, doesn't it just make sense that being seated on your bum would be more comfortable than hanging by your crotch - no matter how light you are?

and in regards to babies facing outwards in the baby bjorn
Think for a second about how you pick your baby up. Do you walk around holding your baby in front of you, facing out? Not if you're like most people I know. You naturally put your baby on your hip or tummy to tummy. Other holding positions are on your shoulders or piggy back.

The point is that a baby is not meant to be facing out for long periods of time. First, the entire front of a baby is vulnerable. Babies are meant to feel safe against an adult facing in. And second, when a baby is facing out, they can never see your face. It's important for baby to check in with you and see how you're reacting to what's going on in the world.

It is recommended that babies are carried facing inward for the following reasons: Infants in outward-facing orientations can’t turn away from surrounding stimuli. They can't turn inward toward a parent's body if stimuli become overwhelming. In this position the baby cannot make eye contact with his or her parent to evaluate facial expressions, social cues, and so forth to make assessment of the situation. Only choose a baby carrier that allows your child to face you ... never out. There are too many events going on around your baby. A baby has no way to exclude himself from the environment by turning his head away and towards you. Healthy sleep is difficult for a baby who is facing outward. I am not a supporter of the outward facing method of carrying a child.

get yourself an ergo!!!!

Yep, I used a Baby Bjorn for 3 months with my DD. At that stage, she was too big and heavy to carry in it, and it killed my back if I wore it for any more than 15 minutes. The Ergo - I literally walked around a Melbourne suburb for 6 hours one day, with short stops for breastfeeds, nappy changes and the occasional drink one day - and by the end of the day, I wasn't even beginning to get sore. My son was 6 months old, and 7 or 8 kg at the time.

I've also worn my 3.5 year old DD on my back. with the Ergo. She's 15kg, and whilst it wasn't the easiest thing in the world, it didn't actually hurt me :)

There's just no comparison between them. None at all :)

Oh wow! That sounds great! I have never really heard of the Ergo before. I have a baby bjorn but both my boys grew out of that pretty quick - they were huge and it killed my shoulders and back after a while.

I just googled Ergo and it looks great.

I think when #3 arrives this is what I will get!!! That will solve how on earth I can go for a walk with 3 kids for an hour :D.

I think about $160-$170 is the going rate. I looked on ebay for one but they weren't much cheaper so I just bought a new one.

It's extra if you need the newborn insert.

Like everybody else, my back was a lot happier when I changed from BB to Ergo.

I agree, the Ergo is absolutely THE best piece of baby related equipment I purchased. DS is 10 kg and I wear him for hours. I work part time and he comes with me and sleeps in it while I sit at the computer it's fantastic.

MAKE SURE that you watch the DVD so that you can get the most out of it. I didn't realise you could breastfeed in it until I watched it about 3 months after purchase, now I breastfeed DS in it all the time, it is so discreet and you don't have to stop. We went to Bali for Christmas and I just wore him non stop and didn't have to stop shopping to breastfeed! It's actually really funny as people don't even realise you're feeding and will go to look in under the hood at the bubba then realise and are embarrassed lol.

:o I haven't watched the DVD. My baby is almost six months - can i still feed him in it? I always take it off for feeding so I'll have to investigate!

There's a 2nd hand, but brand new in box one for $144 here (http://www.roundnround.com.au/product_info.php?products_id=408). Other than that, there's a shop on ebay that's selling non-genuine ERGOs for quite a lot less. I'm not sure what the shop is though...

I'd definitely phone them and ask.

I think you can wear it on your hip (???) and your back so I imagine the DVD would be pretty helpful.

If you can't get it from them, I can you can get it pretty cheaply from the Ergo web site.

You can also go to their website and download the PDF instruction booklet. It has everything that the DVD contains - but if you're a visual learner, then yep, go and ask for a DVD. :)

I got mine online somewhere - just searched for cheapest one but i think it was closer to $150. Bub loved it at first but now cries when i put her in. I think its either too cramped or too hot for her. it does get sweaty. I used a peanut shell up till she grew out of it at 6months and LOVED it. The ergo is more comfy for long wear - no sore back etc but it is a little bulky and awkward to get on. Not for quick trips.

It's funny how 2 different people can have such differing experiences with the same product, isn't it! :)

I actually find, of all the slings I've ever used, the Ergo is the quickest and easiest to put on. The way I do it is, when we pull up somewhere, I get out of the car, and clip the waist belt on, making sure that the shoulder straps have been let out from last wear. This takes about 30 seconds, max.

I then get DS out of his carseat, place him in the harness bit, and put the shoulder straps over my shoulder. With the straps loosened to their fullest, this is easy to do. I adjust his seat, and then, supporting his bottom with one hand, I reach behind me and tighten one shoulder strap, then the other. I then get DD out of the car.

The whole process takes less than a minute. I actually find that it's quicker to put the Ergo on than it is to get the pram out! :D

I love mine, I carry my 21 month old son in it and it's as comfy as it was when I first put him in it when he was 4/5 months old!!

I can see myself using until he is at least three years old. It is a really good carrier. :yelclap:

I tried, but both bub and I hated it when he was really little. We used a hug-a-bub until he was about 5 months old, at which stage he got a bit too big to carry in that comfortably.

I know plenty of people do use it with a newborn comfortably though :)

I havent used it for a newborn, however there is extra newborn inserts your able to purchase which gives bub a little extra support i think.

There is a newborn head insert. If you go to their website it shows you how to use it - the head insert costs $30 and is basically just a blanket - a baby blanket folded would do the same thing, so I wouldn't waste the money, personally.

The reason I didn't like it for a newborn was because their body sort of has to 'twist' in it to sit properly. Ie you put them in in a half-reclining to the side position, with their bum seated - but then their legs have to sort of twist to the side to have them in there securely. It's hard to explain - but it just didn't look at all comfortable to me, and bub hated it. He was VERY comfy and cosy in a HAB though, and given I had two, it wasn't an issue to use them :)

Around 5 months old when he could face toward me, and his legs were okay being that wide open, he loved the Ergo - and still does.

Tam-I-am - I have trouble getting the back straps on once bub is in it - I can't reach. Maybe I'm not letting them out enough? I'm comparing to a sling too, which you just open and drop them in. Never tried a BBjorn.

Sparksgirl - Tam i am is right on about the newborns. I thought the newborn insert was awkward to fit and bub didn't seem quite secure. I much prefered the sling type for the newbie - I can't rave enough about my peanut shell! :D. Bub is lying across, it very cosy and comfy until they are 4 or 5 months and want to get up and see the world (and get too heavy for a sling- sore neck). If you can, consider getting both types.

I let them pretty much ALL the way out - I leave just enough to grab hold of. So, the clasp reaches up to just behind my pony tail, which is nice and easy to clip together :)

Thanks for that website OneCheekyMonkey - bookmarked, to look at tomorrow :D

OK, so I went to try the ERGO today and I couldn't even get it on and do it up without bubs in it! How do you do the back clip up when it is already on? or do you do that up first? The gap didn't look big enough.. perhaps I need to see the DVD on how to do it! The salesperson got me to try the BB on and it was quite easy to use except that bubs hated it! She screamed in it! It did feel weighty on my front and I could see how it would end up aching your back a bit.

Will the shops sell the new generation ergo or are the older ones still around?

OneCheekyMonkey

Here is how I put mine on.

Make sure that the shoulder straps are let out, leaving just enough so that I can grab them later (3 cms or so).

I have adjusted my back clip so that it is quite high thus easy to clip up.

Put on the waist clip

Reach behind, do up the back clip

Put bubby in so that he is comfy

Supporting bubby with 1 arm, reach behind and pull the shoulder tabs so that they are firm, repeat.

I hope that helps. :)
