I need help in finding a book or list that will tell me what foods have no preservatives in them. I am going to put my very angry 2yr old foster child on this diet plan. In the hope it might help her from being so angry or hypo all the time. The idea of spending hours reading all the lables on things while doing the food shopping just doesn't appeal to me. I have tried looking on the net and found a site but it is american based and you have to pay to get the list. Does anyone know of someone who has done this or might have a list. And if so how did it work out. I am fast running out of ideas on how to help my 2yr old.:

We cut preservative 282 out of DS's diet and he improved dramatically. 282 is an anti-moulding preservative found in most breads. Safe ones to use are:
Sunblest White or Wonder White or anything from Brumbies.:)

A really great and informative book is called FED UP.
Her is a link to the site that talks about/to the author. I have a girlfriend who has had great success in following this book.
Good luck. And the 282 preservative mentioned by Katrina is a very serious issue.

WOW this thread is freaky!!! lol. I have spent over an hour tonight surfing looking at all info on preservatives etc. (very confusing!!)
I found that site fed up quite informative and have printed off a little credit card sized list of *nasty preservatives* so that I can start to try and eleminate them!

We (dh and I) have decided to do this to see if DS behaviour improves before we can get into see a Paediatrician (?) next month.
I got bread from Bakers Delight today as it also has no 282. It is a start I figure.

Good luck and I can't wait to see if your child improves.

Sandi :)

My sisters son had some behaviour problems (agresive, hyperactive etc) so she put him on the feingold diet which eliminates arterficial colours, flavours, addatives and limits the salicylate intake The improvements were amazing:smiliedance:
I think the book is called "the Feingold Diet" by Dr Benjamin Feingold

Here is a web site which lists all addatives in foods and what the potential affects these can have on people. Its really scary to find out a lot of addertives have been baned in other countries but still used in Australia:eek:

I think the onlyway of ensuring there is no preservatives in food is to either buy fresh or check the lables

Good luck

I use a book called "addidtive alert" can get you the author if needed. It is fantastic, even gives you a card for your wallet so you can check while shopping. Well worth it as it is amazing the foods with preservatives that should not be given to babies/toddlers. Its made me and my hubby eat alot more healthier too!

buying organic will generally keep you away from nasty preservatives and chemicals etc. just cause bread doesn't have a preservative, it is still white bread - no nutritional value!! try looking in health food shops, or even the healthy food section at coles. if you are looking for cheap organic veggies/fruit, the box delivery is usually a good idea. where are you?? we live in brissie and our food box is fantastic!

DH and I have been on the same track for DD.
She was always so well behaved, but over the last 6 months, she has increasingly become more defiant and hyper (increase in clumsiness as a result).
We noticed that after the odd pop top that she was given as a reward, the devil would come for a visit.
ooh.... the tantrums which would have us absolutely gob smacked (she had NEVER done this before.)
The strange thing was, after about an hour or so, she will come up to us like a different child and give us a hug and a kiss and say "I'm sorry for ..... I don't know why i did that. I won't do that again."

I don't think the pop tops are the only culprit either (though they have been eliminated totally from her diet), but that was just in-our-face reaction. VERY evident. I even asked our CMHN about these preservatives etc and she said they had a list and would end it out to me. :fingerscrossed:

Yay for the fantastic thread! :smiliedance:
Thanks for the leads everyone!

I am also using Additive Alert - Your Guide to Safer Shoping by Julie Eady. It comes with a little bookmark you can take with you when you go shopping, lisiting the main additives you want to avoid. It is scary some of the stuff they put in food.
