I'm having the fam for dinner tomorrow night and thought I would make a big risotto (there goes an hour of my life:D) - it will be a leek, sweet potato, chicken one.
But it seems a bit weird to just slop down a bowl of risotto in front of each person, even though it is filling. Should I have some dishes of something else on the table. Garlic bread seems a bit filling and salad doesn't really go. What do you think? There won't really be time for 'nibbles' first.
Also dessert? We don't do rich sweet things and I often do a fruit salad but I think it's become a joke about mum only being able to do fruitsalad :p Maybe fruitsalad and fruche and meringue cups or something like that?

Would a nice antipasta platter work?
you could make it with some frenchsticks or garclic bread?
not really good on what else to make.
I'd probably just make a big bowl, and then serve each person on the table (instead of bringing a bowl- that would seem weirder to me :p)
For dessert, i love the fruit salad idea. maybe with meringues or cream?
otherwise get one of those ready cake bases, and just top it with fruit and gelatin/jelly.
Have fun at your family meet

My first thought was a salad. Or DH is suggesting a nice crusty bread.

 I'd go a really nice loaf of bread, thickly sliced.
Maybe something like a big Pasta Dura or similar.
For dessert, grab some meringue nests and a box of frozen berries and some really nice cream. Just pile some cream and some berries on top of each meringue nest and serve. Super super easy.

 I think some nice crusty bread too.
Hmm not sure on dessert, fruit salad sounds great to me but I love the stuff so its always good! Maybe something simple like fresh berries and ice cream?

When I cook risotto we love to have a side salad with it - as it adds to the vegie content, has different tastes and textures and makes it seem less 'gluggy' IYKWIM?
Rice (arborio) is a carb, so to have bread with it (although very yummy esp homemade garlic bread), it is just too filling/bloating for us, but its up to you!
For a dessert, i think little meringues with fruit salad and cream or ice cream sounds pretty good to me!!

I've never heard of serving Risotto with something else as well. Whenever I've eaten Risotto at a restaurant, that's what I've gotten - a bowl of Risotto
Personally I'd just serve the Risotto and then follow up with a dessert, maybe fruit salad and yoghurt or ice-cream?

I'd serve it in individual bowls LCM. That way you can garnish and dress it up before you serve it... a small spoon on sour cream, a few shavings of parmesan and some chopped scattered herbs. To me that makes all the difference between 'slopped in a bowl' and 'oh wow.. isn't that lovely' :D
oh, oh, I just thought.... you could make parmesan crisps to really dress it up! make circles of parmesan on a baking tray (I use egg rings to get them really nice) and bake for about 3 - 5 mins in a hot oven until they are melted and bubbly.. let cool and crisp up. I can see a dollop of sour cream, a crisp stood up in the cream and some scattered chives... hmmmmm
