Just wondering if there is anyone in the same situation as me, my 5 months old ds has no interest in playing with toys at all. He will not attempt to pick anything up, he might grab something but it is only just a reflex, he will never look at something and grab it. Am I being paranoid or is this just delayed (not sure). Just wanted some advise on this. I know I should not compare with other babies but it is a bit hard not to, all the other bubs as mums group seem to play with toys and are interested in picking things up and they are all younger than my DS. :(

I Wouldn't worry. All babies develop at different stages. Oliver is 4 1/2 mths and is only grabing things when i put them right near his hand. He has a couple of favourite toys which he will giggle at and reach for but others he has no interest!!!!

I was alittle worried when Oli hadn't rolled over. ( according to 'what to expect in the first year) he should be doing this by 4 1/4 mths. But he shouldn't be able to bear as much weight on his legs as he does ( he stands on one leg steadly when we hold him by his hands!) As my CHN told me they all develop differently. He will gain interest eventually.

This is fairly normal-it's also normal to worry about it! I used to get a bit stressed over these things with my first bub. Now we are on our third and he is 5 months and I'm thinking Gee, I better start offering toys to him! They don't have the motor skills needed to truly hold and play with anything at this age. They need to master the pincer grip first and this won't come until at least 7 months if not later. If you want to the best thing to do is to just keep holding toys in front of him and encourage him to grab at things. Do you have toys overhanging him? Such as an activity mat or a-frame toy? If he is swinging or swiping at these you don't need to worry at all about him holding things yet.:D

Mu youngest DD is 9.5mths and she doesn't really do it either - don't stress though (easier said than done I know).

Each baby does their own thing in their own time.

Hey sal thanks for your reply, Yeah DS has a play mat with the hanging toys he does hit them by mistake he is not looking at them and swiping at them. I feel like I am trying to wish him away sometimes, but you just hope that they will do everything by the book so to speak, but everyone is differenet. He also will not bare his own weight when I stand him up. I guess I'm just getting worried because I want to play with him more. :) When I went to the MCHN for his 4 months there was a fill in and she didn't check any of those things and was in a hurry to get me out of there (didn't like her at all)
