hi ive recently put my bub on the bottle (EBM), and was wondering how much does he need a feed? he's 10 days old. (i know. the bottle already!!). when he was 5days a nurse (i was still in hospital) told me he needed about 90ml every 3hours. i was wondering if he still needs that much or needs more. and when do i up his feeds.
thanx

start off by giving him 100mls. You need to up his feeds when he's drinking all that's in the bottle. If he starts doing that, then try giving him 150mls. He'll stop when he's full, so don't worry about him getting too much. And don't worry about giving him the bottle, he's still gettin the good stuff  I did this for a couple of weeks but i was in and out of hospital all through my pregnancy and those first few weeks so I just didn't have the milk to satisfy bub.

I'd express whenever you feel full, or if you're able, as soon as you feel the 'let down' reflex. You know, the one that feels like razor blades

My kids were all having 200mls by that age, but I'd say go with 100mls for now. If he wants more, offer another 30mls. He will let you know when he is done.

Hey there, I just wanted to say don't be so down on yourself about starting your baby on a bottle already. BF isnt for everyone nor is it sucessful for everyone. Good luck with your baby and the adventures that are ahead :D

Feed him as much as he'll take. He'll guide you to what he needs.

Hi,
The way to work it out is to take his weight(3.9kg) multiply it by 180ml then divide it by 8 or 6. to give you either 3rd hourly or 4th hourly.

Human milk feeding (http://www.lalecheleague.org/llleaderweb/LV/LVFebMar01p3.html) & Exclusive pumping (http://www.kellymom.com/bf/pumping/bf-links-excpumping.html).

The latest research I've read suggests pumping 10 -12 times a day. This can be in cluster pumps for convienence if you like, but its all about draining the breast and providing stimulation to help production. Anything else you need let me know.

Goosie as always has great advice....those sites were great.

I checked them out a while ago (same ones right?)

I'm exclusively pumping too. Ollie has about 6 or 7 feeds a day, he seems to drink about 140ml per feed. He's 7 weeks old...and is thriving. CHN was thrilled with his progress!

My supply was so low, and i read about the cluster pumping...I pumped every 2 hours for 3 days and my supply is good now. I express 6 times a day, if my supply starts to dwindle I express more often.

Make sure you massage your breasts too, it helps drain them. :)

Would love to know your reasons for expressing....if you want to chat please PM me! :)

thanks all. ive given him 125mls and he's drinking the lot. but of course throwing up a bit. (he does it after every feed, even on the breast) been told that its normal, my DP and his bro used to thowup after every feed.
my reason for doing this is that i'm finding it too hard to feed him on the breast. he doesnt latch on. it takes him 10-15mins to get on and he gets so frustrated (and i feel like crying). ive been using a nipple shield tho. works wonders, but he grabs it and pulls it off all the time. i'm pumping so that my partner can feed him (cause he wont change a nappy at all, gives rabbit back to me every time he vomits or farts/poos) and so that he can be looked after by his grandparents (bothsides). cause my partner doesnt want to take rabbit to the shops incase he starts crying. and my DP wont do the shopping himself because i wont let him. i find it easier to get the stuff that i want when i'm there. if i write a list there's always something i forget. or want later.

Hey Krystle

How is the expressing going?

All off a sudden Ollie has decided to up his dosage of Milk! LOL he's gone from an average of 120-140ml 7 times a day to 150-200ml.

He's been having longer sleeps today though.....but he could be making up for yesterday! We were out all day and he didnt sleep much.
