View Full Version : Natural labour - a bit long winded

The morning I went into labour I was feeling a bit more energetic than I had been so I did some washing, and decided I should probably shave my legs seeing as I was due (June 28th 04 the day I ended up going into labour) any day (a major feat in itself for a woman at 40 weeks pregnant) and just pottered, well waddled, around the house doing a general tidy up.... then while I was having my lunch I went into labour about 12.30 pm.

My contractions were about 15 minutes apart and at first were just a bit uncomfortable, so I continued to do what I had to do. Like most women I was afraid of being in the middle of some where really public with lots of people around and having my waters break but it didn’t happen like that.... so I got to about 2 pm and even though I wasn’t sure if it was labour I called up my husband and said "I'm not sure if I'm in labour but is it possible for you to come home early from work?" mean while my father in law who lived upstairs was calling him saying “I think you need to come home, I think Nat's in labour.”

Any way, my hubby came home took one look at me and said "Ok I'm taking you to the hospital right now" so he called the hospital and told them we were on our way and during the drive there I had to say honey its ok I'm not having the baby in the car you don’t have to speed the only problem with the drive was that it was 3.10 pm when we got to the suburb near the hospital and the schools had just go out. but we made it and I waddled into the lobby of the hospital with a hot water bottle on my tummy, they took one look at me in the birth suite and said "well you must be Natalie" and after giving me a quick check over "it looks like you're going to be having your baby today." I opted to start off using the shower as pain relief with a nozzle on my tummy and one on my lower back and as the contractions got a bit more intense I used water immersion a.k.a. hoping in a big bath filled with glorious warm water which I found very relaxing ( I was even falling asleep between contractions towards the end) after being in labour for about 6 hours didn’t think I was coping all that well and seeing as I had been told that majority of first labours were quite long I started to talk to the midwives about getting an epidural, they aid that they would have to give me an internal check and hook me up to some monitors to keep an eye on bub... so I hoped out of the bath. Meanwhile my contractions were about every 3 mins and were about 1.5 to 2 mins. While they were doing the internal, they discovered that I was fully dilated, then my waters broke and they said “well look like you’ll be having this baby sooner than you thought; pretty soon you’ll start to feel the urge to push, just let us know when you do… We’re just going to get a couple of things to get ready and we’ll be back in a minute” two steps before the door “um I‘m starting to feel the urge to push now.”
Just over an hour later my bub Ty was born after only a little over 8 ours in labour. When I was pushing him out the midwives didn’t get a chance to quite turn him around properly and he just shot out so I ended up with a third degree tear from his shoulders but he was worth it, and I’ve since recovered very well.Even though it was only 14 weeks ago it seems like he has been with us for years.

I totally recommend using water immersion as a pain relief method if its available to you. I was also told that they believed my labour was quicker because of it.

Sorry this is a bit long winded
