My DD is 15 weeks and she drinks 5 x 150ml bottles of milk per 24 hours. She sleeps approx 10 hours at night and I was told by CHN that she should be drinking more and I should wake her during the night for a feed:eek:

She's a reflux bub and not putting on a huge amount of weight but she is happy and content and I can't force feed her anymore..sometimes she will only take 100ml of a bottle....

What are your bubs drinking? and what age are they?

Hi babytoo, if she isn't waking up for a feed, then personally I wouldn't start waking her. Why create a habit that in a few months you will be wondering how to break?

If you are worried about her weight, you could try and increase amount of mls given during the day, but like you said, you cannot force her to drink it. Maybe she is a small eater and is getting what she needs. She may have a growth spurt soon and increase the amount she takes and may even start waking for more during the night, but I would wait until she takes the lead IFKWIM.

Hi babytoo,

I honestly wouldnt be waking your DD up for a feed. At 15wks my DS was only having 5 x 150ml bottles and like your DD some of those bottles wouldnt get finished. He also sleeps through the night.

My CHN said to never wake a sleeping baby so if i were you, then i would continue on the way things are going, especially since you have a happy contented baby!!

Good Luck!

My DD2 is 10 mths old and still only drinks the same as your bub....plus a small amount of solids. At your bubs age she was probably only drinking about 120 mls for 5 feeds.

Wake a sleeping child! God forbid! LOL If she is sleeping through the night and still putting on weight, i'd leave her be. She's obviously getting enough to satisfy her.

There is no way in hell I would be waking her up for a feed...sometimes I think MCHN's must be on drugs

My DD only ever ate about that amount at that age (and until she was quite a few months older than you bub actually) and she slept 12 hours at night and did not wake to feed, ever.

If your baby is putting on weight at an acceptable rate I would quite happily be ignoring the child health nurse and keep doing what you're doing.

I agree!!!! Let her sleep. My Oliver is 4 1/2 mths and is lucky to finish a 120ml bottle every 3 hrs. He generally has one at 7 when he wakes, then 10, then 1, then 4, then again at 7pm before bed. Occasionally he may wake, and i give him another feed. I have just introduced some sollids ( sweet potato) at lunch and again at dinner.

If she is gaining weight then leave her. I only gave him solids as my GP recommended it! I wish i had waited a bit longer. But he is loving it and really thriving on it.

Also have you tried a faster flowing teat. This helped with Oli when he was only drinking 80 mls every 3 hrs.

Whatever works for you and bub

My DS is a greedy guts - 270mls 4 x a day and he drains most of them :o . He's nearly 5 months old.

I would agree with the other girls - if your bub is happy, alert and putting on weight, why change it? The MCHN doesn't know your bub as well as you do - mother's instinct is far more accurate than a percentile chart.

A faster flowing teat might help, but if they don't want to drink, well, you can't force them  .

My son is 5 months and he drinks 220mls, 7 times a day! And thats a minimum!!

He drinks 220ml every 2-3 hours during the day and he drinks every 3-4 hours through the night.

No exceptions ever!!!

He is a little pig, but still only a small baby, I think he is trying to catch up!!

Ethan has drunk 6 or 7 bottles in a 24 hour period of around 120mls since he was 5 days old - he's now 23 days.

I personally think that bubs will let you know how much they need. And really, if you give them more than they need, all they will do is bring it back up (:barf: ... sorry!)

Poppy is 10 weeks old and drinks 180ml's and has 5 or 6 bottles over 24 hours. It took a while with her to get her to sleep through but now she sleeps from 10pm - 6am most nights.

I wouldn't wake her to feed but I have given Poppy the "dream feed" at 10pm if she is asleep. Babies still suck and feed while they are asleep if they are hungary and that way I have topped her up for the rest of the night and we don't wake her and have her unsettled again.
